Merchandise/Action Figures Images

I will be uploading some higher res images of some of the figures we have already, seen here, and even completing some of the sets. I was thinking about removing the backgrounds of the images I took to help them stand out more, but noticed that no other figure picture we have has this done.

So to sum things up, I'm curious to know if removing the backgrounds is a desired effect or not, before putting the work into doing so. Pixel 13:24, 23 June 2013 (ADT)

I'd say it's especially desired since the background is totally irrelevant. No one needs to see what kind of desks people have. :P

Some problems after the upgrade

Some rather minor problems that I noticed. I checked with IE 8, Chrome and Firefox (latest editions). 1) On the left side there seems to be a small problem with the drop-down menus, they appear with different color (blue instead of yellow). 2) On the front page ?UNIQ2b965de5753dc714-css-00000000-QINU? and ?UNIQ2b965de5753dc714-css-00000001-QINU? appear, below the games and above the "Welcome to Zelda Wiki". Last, there is some color overlapping in the search bar (blue and yellow) and in Firefox "Search" appears twice, while in Chrome and IE it shows a square on the right. Hoo boy so many problems.

1. I logged in on this page but it didn't stick until I hard-refreshed RecentChanges in another tab. Hard-refreshing this tab didn't work; only opening this page up from that tab did.
2. Some templates cause ridiculously broken HTML to stink up the page. Have a look at Morth and Eyegore.
3. The green gradient for the search bar background doesn't reach all the way down through the whole box.
4. When I was making this post, the "Currently editing" feature was suddenly replaced with some sort of 503 error, which fixed itself once I tried to get a better look at it.

Ok, I'm not sure what is the proper solution to the second point, but I noticed that if the pages have the caption field completed then the problem is fixed. Edit: The InfoField template needs to be altered. The problem with the caption messes up all the pages. Also, some article pages just don't load at all (Majora's Mask (Object), Groose, Gohma, Ganon for example) Zeldafan1982 (talk) 17:33, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

More problems:

1. Special:SpecialPages is dead.
2. There's a ton of spam coming in and no evidence of their accounts being created in the user creation log.

Thanks for the heads up, guys. Turns out the update wasn't as smooth as planned. To address your issues:

• Pages with audio files (like theme songs) are dead. Audio files don't seem to play nice with the update. Fixed
• Account creation has been disabled due to some database errors and the spambots.
• The issue with infoboxes should be fixed now. Please tell me if it's not.
• A couple extensions are broken (namely the CSS extension), resulting in the weird error codes you see. Fixed

Ogg files and custom citation buttons

Another thing, the custom citation buttons no longer appear. Also, is it possible that the ogg player allows you to go to a specific point? I noticed that it is possible in the file description. Edit: I just noticed that it is not possible to upload ogg files. Does the problem occur only with ogg files or with images as well?
By the way, nice job fixing the errors guys! The problem seems to be now that there are certain pages where the code is a bit problematic and it is difficult to track them down. Zeldafan1982 (talk) 23:02, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Typo template

The typo template seems to have a problem. The <i></i> tags are shown when it is used in quotes. Zeldafan1982 (talk) 00:01, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Fixed. If I understand correctly, a lot of HTML tags are not supported in the new HTML standard (HTML5) which we are now using since the update. Tags such as <center> and <font> will no longer work in some cases (mainly tables and templates, it seems) and will have to be phased out in favor of inline CSS (example). — Hylian King ^[*] 15:01, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Problem with Image Renaming

I just came across an error while attempting to move this image. It used to have a capitalized file extension, which is why I decided to rename it. After attempting to move it, I received an error message saying that I didn't have permission to do so, along with several pieces of code. After exiting the form, I noticed that while the file description page hadn't moved, the image itself had. However, when I tried to view the new image all I could see was this error message:

After this I tried to move the file description page again, which worked, but the image still didn't appear and an error message was in its place. I wasn't quite sure whether this issue was due to the recent update or not, so I placed in within a different section. I've never tried to move an image before, so I can't say if it has ever worked for me.

Also, on a related note, the moving form doesn't seem to have the option to suppress redirects. Dannyboy601^Talk 11:18, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Moving files is an admin user right; so is suppressing redirects, which is a form of deletion, so you wouldn't be able to under normal circumstances.

Captions in galleries and YouTube videos

I noticed that the captions in galleries and YouTube videos are not automatically centered. Regarding the latter, is it possible that the template is changed to do that? Also, a weird problem; in cases where "Advertisements" is used as a header the s has to be omitted otherwise the header doesn't appear (example). Zeldafan1982 (talk) 14:48, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

I'll look into the video centering. Shouldn't be too hard. And as for the advertisements thing... Are you sure? I can see it just fine on the page you linked after reverting your edit. I checked with IE and Chrome and the header appears. Is it a Firefox problem? I deleted the cache but the header doesn't appear. Also, since I was checking the pages with YouTube videos, should I keep the center tag or delete it? I deleted it in some pages, not sure if I did right.

Hm. Not sure. I don't use Firefox, so I wouldn't know. I'll have to install Firefox later and check it out to see what's causing the issue. As is, I'm getting ready to go to bed.

As for the vids, use style="text-align:center" to replace the deprecated center tag. We should really try to shy away from outdated elements like that. And as far as uploading ogg files goes, what issue do you mean? I'm not aware of any problems with uploading them, unless you're referring to the removal of MultipleUpload.User:Justin/sig 15:31, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

The problem is that after the uploading is finished it shows only a blank screen. The upload log doesn't show the files either. We had a similar problem with the ogg files in the past if I remember correctly. Zeldafan1982 (talk) 16:40, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Given that I'm still awake, I decided to go ahead and install Firefox to check out the issue. I still don't see your problem, so now I'm telling you that I'll need a screenshot of what you mean before I can do anything for the issue.

As for OGG files, you filled up the recent changes with uploads of them a few days ago, if I recall correctly :P I'll try uploading a couple OGGs to test it out, though.User:Justin/sig 16:48, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

False positive.. the issue was caused by AdBlock :P Also, another minor issue. I see that the Kaltura player has two "versions", one appearing in the file description (example) that lets you go to a specific point of the track and the "lite" version that shows on the pages and galleries. Whether or not the progress bar appears depends on the width of the player. The magic number seems to be 233px. If the player's smaller than that, there isn't enough room for a progress bar so it disappears. The default size for embeds is 180px, so that's why it's not appearing on pages. If you increase the width to, say, 233px, it will appear. (But even then it's inconveniently tiny. I would say the width should be at least 250px.)

The problem with that is most of our audio files are used in infoboxes. Increasing the width of the embed by 50+ pixels will stretch out the infoboxes on a lot of pages. — Hylian King ^[*] 12:53, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Warning when a file with the same name but different extension is uploaded

I noticed that when you try to upload a file that has the same name, but different extension from another one (I checked with an ogg file versus a png) it gives this warning: "You will upload over an already existing file.If you proceed, the information in this form will not appear on the description page."
You can still ignore the warning and upload the file without overriding, but the warning shouldn't appear, and may make someone change the name although there is no need to. Not a major problem but still. Zeldafan1982 (talk) 17:29, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Banning

Hey, so I just joined Zelda wiki several days ago, and I was wanted to know what actions are inappropriate and constitutes a ban, and whether or not we can IP ban, partially because I don't want do something stupid and ban myself, but mainly whether or not we can legally ban User: TheLinkOfTime. As some of you may know, TheLinkOfTime joined this wiki several days ago, and has since then consistently harassed people on their user talk pages. In fact his only "contributions" have been to talk pages. Here's a quote:

Images

I've never edited anything other than text, so I was wondering if anyone could ever explain or point me to an article that explains how to screenshot images from games. I noticed that the Treasure page on Skyward Sword treasures was missing images for over half of the treasures. I was wondering how to take the initial screenshot before rendering it. Emulators are pretty much the only way to get top quality images. I imagine a high end capture card would also do the trick, but even then I'm not sure it would equal an emulator screenshot. It's also possible to hack the ROM and rip the sprites/textures/models directly, but that's usually more difficult. As for how to take emulator screenshots, that will depend on the emulator. It's pretty straightforward, though.

It had occurred to me that we should write guide on acquiring images, but there is the potential liability to consider. (Although despite what Nintendo has to say about it, if you've paid for a physical copy of the game and are using emulators for personal, non-profit use, that's a pretty solid fair use claim. But then again I'm not a lawyer.)

People generally get the Hauppage HD PVR, but it costs a fair bit of money, so it would have to be a commitment (unless you're not phased by that sort of money).

Generally, I would recommend doing some research. Models that can record at 1080p are obviously what you want, but it doesn't hurt to look at some reviews. - Tony^{T S C} 04:26, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

It's no problem, these pages are here for raising questions. I would recommend making a special request at Zelda Wiki:Image Requests under "Other Requests" at the bottom of the page. If you know someone who uploads Skyward Sword stuff (*ahem*Kidbuu4ever*ahem*), you could always try asking them personally.

For Skyward Sword it's possible to get decent quality screenshots just from online videos. There's lots of HD playthroughs of the game on Youtube, namely LilMikel's. You just have to pause the video at the right time and hit the print screen button. It's better than nothing.

I imagine capture cards are only able to record at the same resolution as the monitor, but again, I'm no expert. (Emulators are really the way to go.) — Hylian King ^[*] 07:41, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Actually funny enough, I did get most of that Skyward Sword stuff when it first came out from HD videos. Probably easier to stick with emulators for the highest quality images, just be careful about things like widescreen hacks that make the game look too different from it's native source - Bwar (talk) 12:46, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Finances

I was searching for a way to donate to Zelda Wiki, and found none. Does this mean that this site is funded solely by advertisements? If so, is it possible to increase the amount of ads to provide more revenue? Allowing advertisements to appear to registered users sounds like an easy way to increase revenue. ZW is funded solely by the banner ads at this time. We appreciate the gesture, though. I will bring your suggestions to the attention of the bureaucrats.

When we first started using banner ads, they did appear to all users. But we quickly decided to limit them to guest users, precisely because registered users do not have much of an impact on revenue (according to Cody). ALBW Bosses and Dungeons are out of order

On the two pages Dungeons in A Link Between Worlds and Bosses in A Link Between Worlds the bosses and their respective dungeons aren't in order. I haven't played the game yet myself so I don't know the order of the dungeons. An example of what I mean is on the Dungeons page it appears the House of Gales is after the Eastern Palace, but on the Bosses it appears to be the Tower of Hera. That might be due to the order of the dungeons depending on what the player decides. I think the file select screen has a set order for the portraits though so it might be good to go off of that -- Bwar (talk) 00:43, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Well the general consensus on both the Bosses in A Link Between Worlds and the template for bosses have them a certain way so I just went with that. Now it's a least uniformed even if there is no set order in which the dungeons go. --User:Shadow Reaper/sig 01:36, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

More Theories

One thing i've noticed about the bottom of the hilt on the Sword of Twilight is an eye symbol, simular to the Sheika's symbol, And i've heard theories that the Twili have something to do with the Sheika's absense. I think the Twili ARE the Sheika. One supporter of my theories is Midna's reddish eyes. Also, i've played Twilight Princess and beat it. --noahboy02 7:58 December 7th.

Editting the enemy page of A Link Between Worlds

I noticed that it isn't possible to edit the image gallery of enemies from A Link Between Worlds Arrghus (talk) 19:29, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

How so? I checked to make sure that page isn't locked from editing, so are you simply looking for an edit option on the right of the page? Those only appear after a header (marked by == == in the coding), so you have to click "edit" at the top of the page instead, if that's the case. - Tony^{T S C} 20:51, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Names in other regions

What's the standard for names in other regions? Do we follow ALbW and have the "Meaning" column? Or like ALttP where the meaning is used by hovering over the title? Or like THF/LoZ where the mouse over is used for romanized text and meaning is used for the translation? I'm confused.

Personally I prefer the ALBW arrangement best, mostly for accessibility reasons. The tooltip from hovering over the word cannot always be viewed, such as on mobile devices, and it can wreak havoc with narration tools as well. But whatever we go with, I agree that we need to be consistent. Manual Move Needs Fixing

Recently, the user HelmarokKing has done a manual copy-paste "move" of the content that was created at Rosso's House to the official term Miner's House. This type of move, however, is heavily discouraged, as the page history does not get carried over between titles as per wiki policy. If wiki policy weren't like this, I'd've manually-moved the content currently at Baris to Herb, the person that article is really about, a long time ago.
