The Chris Houlihan Room is a secret room in Template:ALTTP. It contains 45 Blue Rupees scattered on a shining blue floor and a Telepathy Tile on the back wall. The tile says "My name is Chris Houlihan. This is my top secret room. Keep it between us, okay?"[1] This may be a reference to the famous quote from Template:LOZ. While the room exists in the Game Boy Advance version of the game, the Telepathy Tile is not there.

Access

The room is not an intended part of normal gameplay, but rather a crash prevention measure. It is a failsafe room that the game sends Link to when it can't determine which room he should be sent to. There are at least five different ways to access this room. One of the most well-known methods involves a series of well-timed dashes using the Pegasus Boots starting from the Sanctuary all the way to the secret entrance Link used to enter Hyrule Castle's dungeon the first time. If executed correctly, Link will find himself in the underground room. If Link exits the room, he will find himself outside of his house.

Technical Info

This bug occurs when the game detects an error in Link's position, specifically the Y coordinate. It is known to happen 2 different ways:

1. Use a bomb to knock Link into the lowest few pixels of the screen. Link can also use the Pegasus Boots to knockback himself backwards into the lowest few pixels. Next, use the Pegasus Boots facing downwards into a screen transition. Afterwards, find a hole and drop into it.

2. Go into certain rooms (like the Sanctuary and the cave north east of the Lost Woods) and dash out of it. You will notice as you leave the room that the camera shifts down slightly. Next, find a hole and stand next to it. Set a bomb down and allow the blast to knock you into the hole.

History

Nintendo held a contest in a 1990 Nintendo Power magazine, where a randomly-selected winner would get to appear in a future NES game. To win, the person had to take a picture of the elusive Warmech boss in the game Final Fantasy, and mail it to Nintendo Power. Chris Houlihan received the grand prize: a cameo appearance in A Link to the Past.
