In The Adventure of Link, the Water Town of Saria is a town in midwestern Hyrule, situated just north of Death Mountain.

My timeline theory is that Zelda actually takes place on Earth and is the root of reality. The timeline has many splits all over the place, and because of the way it works, I can put most Fanon and other works of fiction in it somewhere.
In the Water Town of Saria, Link must find a mirror that was lost by one of the women living here. The mirror is found under a table in the first house of the town's second area. As a reward, the woman allows Link to meet an Old Man In order to cross the river, Link must talk to a man known as Bagu who lives in a house in the middle of the forest. Upon talking to Bagu, he gives a note to Link, which he must show to the guard and thus be able to freely cross the bridge.

In the Adult Timeline, it starts with OOT (not the end, though) and then the untold events leading up to Hyrule's flooding. After Hyrule has been flooded long enough for it to be forgotten, the events of The Wind Waker happen. After WW comes Phantom Hourglass and Tetra's Trackers (in either order), followed by a set of fully-compatible Fanon stories including (chronalogically): The Lost Sea Charts, Trident of Tides, Komali's legend, The Star of Manalin, The Crown of Darkness, The Mask of Fate, Evil Angel, and The Spirit War (which can go either way). After a good amount of time, Spirit Tracks happens, followed by countless untold stories.
Many inhabitants, notably young women dressed in blue, transform into Ache (called "Eyes of Ganon" by the other townsfolk) after Link talks to them. The Child Timeline, however, is far more complex, with or without Fanon. It starts with the end of OOT, and then Majora's Mask (I don't want to explain how many splits THAT caused). There WAS another split caused by time traval in a later game, Twilight Princess. This resulted in light and shadow timelines. The light will be told first.....Twilight Princess, Link's Crossbow Training, the end.

The Shadow Prince
In The Shadow Prince, the Water Town of Saria is first introduced after Impa suggests that Link go there to find the Mirror of Truth to discover Charles's true identity. The young hero can also be forced to go there by the King of Hyrule, depending on the choices that Link makes throughout the book. Once he arrives to the gates of the town, however, he bangs on the door only to find that no one answers him. The only way to unlock the town's gates is by either using a key given to him by an Old Man while traveling to the Town of Ruto or by using a Magic Potion handed to the young hero in Midoro Swamp. Depending which item he uses to open the gates affects the situations developed in the Water Town of Saria.

Then there is the Shadow Timeline. This may be the saddest timeline in the history of time. It is also the most familiar to people who live in a box naked in an alleyway and have no idea what Zelda is. The shadow timeline is actually an infinant number of identical timeline "trees" caused by the time travel in TP not being successful and therefor causing split after split after split. On the shadow timeline, events simaler but not the same as those leading up to WW happen: Hyrule is thrown into darkness, it has to be flooded. However, due to it happening later than WW's lead-up-to events, WW doesn't happen here. Also, the people don't forget. A New Hyrule is founded, blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. However, there isn't a Spirit War--no need. Then A Link to the Past happens. Through careful study, I have found that this is followed by the Four Swords series and the Oracles, and THEN Links Awakening, making the longest list of Zelda games with the same Link. This is followed by The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. But wait! There was a triple split in Oracle of Ages! Two of them have what I mentioned, though the untold one has Veran never possesing ANYBODY. Then there's the Ultamate Branch.
If Link used the key, he will find himself in a busy town square. An Old Woman will then waddle towards him and ask if he's Link. The young hero notices that her eyes are clear as glass, and the old woman, rewarding Link for his observation, will point to an apple tree located in the Wiseapple Farm that will make Link's eyes as clear as hers. The young hero approaches the tree, which is surrounded by a wide moat bubbling with green slime and sending off a nauseating odor. Once Link figures out how to cross the moat, he will notice something shining in a tree branch and will realize it's the Mirror of Truth, which is what the old lady meant by clear eyes.

The Ultamate Branch is disaster. Many deaths. Why? Because Link wasn't there to save the world. It's very hard to explain THAT. Many species were driven to near-extinction. Some compleatly died out and became legends that keep changing (like Kokiris and Zoras, or rather, elves and mermaids). Life as we know it began to form.....
If, however, Link used the Magic Potion, a mustachioed man out of the crowd will enthusiastically approach Link and announce to the whole town that Link has arrived, which causes for them to surround the young hero. Link then asks who the man is and how he knew he was coming, and the man introduces himself as Nilbom the Tailor, pointing in the direction of his shop. He goes on to say that the king sent word that Link was on the way, and guesses that if the young hero is looking for something, he will find it in the town meeting hall. Just as Link is following Nilbom, he looks to the tailor shop's window and realizes that Nilbom's name is "Moblin" backwards. Deciding to follow the man will eventually result in Link's death, but by choosing to not follow him will cause for the young hero to return to North Castle exhausted and without the Mirror of Truth.

And you know what? The timeline keeps going until time itself stops. It has many branches, of course. Hundreds of them. Thousands. Millions! In one, the universe goes bye-bye because of a little decision change without time travel, but other than that, paradoxes and splits kept happening. They all branch off from one line, though. The line that we sit in as we take pictures, climb towers, explore the woods out back. Yes, this split resulted in reality as we know it. And we know it well.
Trivia
*It is possible that this town was named after Saria, one of the Seven Sages from Ocarina of Time.

*This is the only town in which Link is known to speak. When he finds the mirror under a table, he says, "I found a mirror under the table."

Another theory of mine is that there are at least two reincarnation lines. This has actually been confirmed in Twilight Princess, as "Rinku" knows "Link".

There are two reincarnation lines: Links and Rinkus. Links, like the Hero of Time and the Hero of Winds, are more commonly given hero titles. Most Links must obtain the Triforce, but there are a few ecceptions. Links are also relatively more goofy and accedent-prone, but they have been shown to be a bit stronger and braver as well. Most Links DO talk (mostly the Hero of Winds), but it is usually just a word or phrase like "c'mon!" or "...hey!". The Hero of Winds sometimes has his own words in a diolog box (like "Hey in there!"), and he may very well be the only Link OR Rinku to have any dialog in a box.

Rinkus, such as the Hero of Twilight and the "Hero of Skies", are generaly better at handling hights than Links and are often in darker stories. Rinkus are also generally bad at keeping themselves away from other people's fights, as was shown in both Twilight Princess (Midna vs. Ganondorf) and Spirit Tracks (Zelda vs. Malludus). Another thing about Rinkus is that they are usually born with the Triforce, and if they aren't, they never get it at all.
