*~*A Little Bit About Me*~*

My name is sailormoonbeam02. I have been a fan of the 'Legend of Zelda' series since the original 'Legend of Zelda' released back in the 1980s. Since that time, I have beaten each of the games.

My top 3 Zelda games are:

  1. Ocarina of Time
  2. Twilight Princess
  3. A Link to the Past

*~*The Legend of Zelda Timeline Theory*~*

As for the Zelda timeline, as this is always a point of discussion, this is what I think it is:

  1. Minish Cap (gb)
  2. a.) child link Ocarina of Time (n64).....split.....- b.) adult link Ocarina of Time (n64)
  3. a.) Majora's Mask (n64)
  4. a.) Twilight Princess (wii/gc)
  5. a.) a Link to the Past (snes)
  6. a.) Link's Awakening (gb)
  7. a.) Legend of Zelda (nes)..............................- b.) Windwaker (gc)
  8. a.) Zelda 2: the Adventures of Link (nes)........- b.) Phantom Hourglass (ds)
  9. a.) Oracle of Ages/Seasons (gb)...................- b.) Oracle of Ages/Seasons (gb)
  10. a.) Four Swords (gba/gc)

This is my reasoning for this timeline (note that I assume that Link and Zelda are reincarnated several times and not necessarily the same person):

This is a work in progress, so I will update it as time goes on ^_^

In Ancient Hyrule, the first thing to occur was Creation. This is when the three Goddesses gathered together to create Hyrule and the rest of the world. Din, using Power, created the land. Nayru, using Wisdom, created the spirit of law. Farore, using Courage, created all life forms to uphold the law. The three then departed to the Sacred Realm, leaving the Triforce in their wake. The Book of Mudora also speaks about the Sacred Realm and the Triforce:

In a realm beyond sight, the sky shines gold, not blue. There, the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true.

If you would seek the Sacred Triangle, listen well. The resting place of the Sacred Triangle, the Sacred Realm...It is a mirror that reflects what is in the heart...The heart of one who enters it...The Triforce, the Sacred Triangle...It is a balance that weighs the three forces: Power, Wisdom, and Courage...If the heart of the one who holds the Sacred Triangle has all three forces in balance, that one will gain the True Force to govern all...But if that one's heart is not in balance, the Triforce will separate into three parts: Power, Wisdom, and Courage...Only one part will remain for the one who touched the Triforce, the part representing the force that one most believes in...If that one would seek the True Force, that one must acquire the two lost parts...Those two parts will be held by those chosen by destiny, who will bear the Triforce mark on the backs of their hands.

The 'Minish Cap' (MC) is a logical first game. This would easily be Millennia after Creation. MC gives the origins of the Hero’s green hat, Light Arrows, the Picori Sword, where the Armos originated, the 4 Elements, how monsters entered into Hyrule at all, and how Death Mountain gained its namesake. The immediate threat is Vaati, and not Ganon. Additionally, the hero is not necessarily Link, and there is no evidence that the Master Sword exists. It is possible that the Picori Sword is the precursor and was replaced by the Master Sword. The language at this time would be Ancient Hylian.

About 100 years later, the Hruylian Civil War occurs. This happens before Hyrule is united and before the Imprisoning War (10 years after the completion of the Hylian Civil War). During this time, the Dark Interlopers try to use the Fused Shadow to try to take control of the Sacred Realm. This leads to the resultant exile of the Twili to the Twilight Realm by the Four Guardian Spirits who shatter the Fused Shadow into 4 pieces. One fused shadow shard remained within the Twilight Realm whilst the other three were scattered about Hyrule (Forest, Fire, and Water Temples). At the end of the war, Ganondorf Dragmire, the Gerudo King, comes to the aid of the Hylian King to unite Hyrule. The Mirror of Twilight was created as the means to move between the two dimensions, entrusted to the care of the 7 Sages. It is during this time that the first incarnation of Link, the Hero of Time, is born and hidden with the Kokiri and the Great Deku Tree. The language at this time would be Ancient Hylian.

This leads to ‘Ocarina of Time’ (OT) as the second game. The language at this time would still be Ancient Hylian. This is also where the split timeline comes into play. Starting as a child, Link is introduced to the Great Deku Tree, Princess Zelda, and Ganondorf. When he meets Zelda, she is spying on Ganondorf and then Link learns of how evil Ganondorf is. After, Link acquires the Hylian Shield, the Ocarina, the Boomerang, and the 3 Spiritual Stones that are necessary to open the door to the Master Sword, also called the Blade of Evil’s Bane. The door is in the Temple of Time, which was built by Rauru, the Sage of Light. It is also hinted that Rauru and Kaepora Gaebora are one in the same. Once Link takes the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time on Cataclysm’s Eve, Link opens the portal to the Sacred Realm, from which he would have gained the abilities of the Hero of Time, but he was too young. So he was sealed away in the Temple of Time and slept for 7 years so that he could grow up and truly become the Hero of Time. However, almost immediately after Link opened the Portal, the Great Cataclysm occurred as Ganondorf used the Portal opened by Link to enter the Sacred Realm. Once there, Ganondorf put his hands on the Triforce. Ganondorf only wants power, so instead of him gaining the entire artifact, it splits into 3 pieces, which are given to 3 people – Power for Ganondorf, Wisdom for Zelda, and Courage for Link. With Ganondorf’s actions, the Sacred Realm becomes a land that is a reflection of Ganondorf’s heart, the Dark World. He is not satisfied yet, so he returns to Hyrule and the Imprisoning War begins.

In 7 years time, Link awakens as the Hero of Time. He then acquires the Golden Gauntlets, the Hookshot, the Iron Boots, and the Mirror Shield. While doing so, he finds and frees the 6 remaining Sages from the Temples. For reference, the 7 Sages are Forest (Saria – Kokiri), Fire (Darunia – Goron), Water (Ruto – Zora), Shadow (Impa – Sheikah), Spirit (Nabooru – Gerudo), Light (Rauru – Hylian), and Time (Zelda – Hylian). Link fights Ganondorf and defeats him by use of the Master Sword. Ganondorf almost immediately comes back as Ganon, and Link defeats him by use of the Light Arrows that he received from Zelda. With this final battle completed, Ganon is sealed in the Dark World (Sacred Realm) as Ganondorf, the Imprisoning War ends and Zelda sends Link back in time 7 years so that he can have his life back. This is where the split in the timeline occurs.

In the future there is now no adult Link, as he has basically disappeared. The Triforce of Courage, with no body to inhabit, splits on its own accord into 8 separate shards. Those 8 shards are spread around Hyrule for the next Hero to find if the time ever comes. Eventually, Ganondorf finds a way to escape. However, with no Hero, there is no way to defeat him. Ganondorf deactivates the Master Sword (the only weapon that can physically harm him) by using his minions to kill the Earth and Wind Sages. This removed their power from the blade. The people of Hyrule prayed for help, and eventually the Goddesses came to their help, flooding the land and creating the Great Sea. Ganondorf and his army were frozen in time, with the Master Sword in the Pedestal of Time acting as the key. Only when a new hero rose would the Master Sword be pulled out, releasing Ganondorf so that he could be defeated (leading to Wind Waker).

Back in the past, Link rushes to his original meeting with Zelda, where he learned of the evil concerning Ganondorf. He tells Zelda all that had occurred in the future, and the two rush to the King of Hyrule, Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, and tell him of what is to be if Ganondorf is left unchecked. Ganondorf is subsequently imprisoned for treason in the Arbiter’s Grounds (Spirit Temple), where he is watched by the Seven Sages while waiting for his execution. On the roof of the prison, he is chained to a boulder near to the Mirror of Twilight. He is impaled with a Sword of Light, but does not die. Due to the manner in which Zelda sent Link to the past, he kept his part of the Triforce (Courage) within him. When he arrived, this created a paradox in which the Triforce as a whole could not exist. It could not be removed from Link so instead it came to exist in its 3 entities (Wisdom, Power, and Courage) within the 3 people that would have received them, regardless of the future events. Since Ganondorf has the Triforce of Power within himself, he is invincible to anything but the Master Sword. He kills the current Sage of Water and before he can kill the other Sages, he is flung into the Twilight Realm, where he is imprisoned for 100 years (the start of Twilight Princess).

‘Majora’s Mask’ immediately follows the child ‘Ocarina of Time’ timeline. The language at this time would be Ancient Hylian. This tale takes place in a land called Termina for 3 days. This is similar in manner to what occurs in Link’s Awakening. Skull Kid makes appearance.

‘Majora’s Mask’ immediately follows child ‘Ocarina of Time’, and both are before ‘a Link to the Past’.

‘Twilight Princess’ is after the child ‘Ocarina of Time’ and ‘Majora’s Mask’, so it makes sense for it to be between ‘Majora’s Mask’ and ‘a Link to the Past’. As ‘Windwaker’ is 100 years after ‘Ocarina of Time,’ this game occurs in tandem with ‘Windwaker’. The language at this time would be Modern Hylian. The idea of a whistle (instrument) appears again. The Light and the Dark World concept appears (Real World and Twilight Realm), which is traversed by means of the Magic Mirror. The Mirror is shattered by Midna at the conclusion of the tale, after she is revealed as Princess of the Twilight Realm in her true form. Master Sword becomes the Light Sword. Light Arrows appear with the assistance of Zelda.

In 'Windwaker', the beginning speaks of the Hero of Time who suddenly disappeared, and then Hyrule flooded. This hints greatly to a split timeline with the adult hero who "disappeared" for the past. As ‘Twilight Princess’ occurs 100 years after ‘Ocarina of Time’ also, this game occurs in tandem with ‘Twilight Princess’. The evil “Ganondorf” escapes from his imprisonment, wreaking havoc across the land. With the Hero gone, returned to the past, the Gods flood Hyrule, placing everything below into a state of suspended animation, waiting for a time when the Hero would return and restore Hyrule to its glory. When the Hero is revealed, he must collect the 3 Pearls (A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess) and the 8 Shards of Courage (Triforce of Courage, Legend of Zelda). He gets the Hero’s Shield, the Mirror, Power Bracelets, and the Light Arrow. He also has the Wind Waker (musical instrument/conductors wand). ‘Phantom Hourglass' is the direct sequel to 'Windwaker'. The language at this time would be Modern Hylian. ‘Spirit Tracks’ is the sequel to ‘Phantom Hourglass’ whose events occur 100 years after ‘Phantom Hourglass.’

In the ‘a Link to the Past’ guide (the one from Nintendo), in the prologue, it says that ‘Zelda 2: the Adventures of Link’ comes after the ‘Legend of Zelda’, which is after ‘a Link to the Past’. The Town of Rauru in Zelda 2 is named after the Sage of the same name in OOT. The language at this time would be Modern Hylian.

In the guide book to Link’s Awakening (also from Nintendo), it says in the prologue that ‘Link’s Awakening’ comes after ‘a Link to the Past’. Based on this, for these for games, the order is ‘a Link to the Past’ (snes), ‘Link’s Awakening’ (gb), ‘Legend of Zelda’ (nes), and ‘Zelda 2: the Adventures of Link’ (nes). The language at this time would be Modern Hylian.

The game ‘Four Swords’ (single player gc version) is based upon most of the prior games (there are elements from ‘a Link to the Past’, ‘Legend of Zelda’, ‘Zelda 2: the Adventures of Link’, and ‘Link’s Awakening’, simply based upon the boss battles) and should then come after ‘Link’s Awakening’. I see it as a retelling, after many years, of the fantastic story of the Legend of Zelda. The language at this time would be Modern Hylian.
