"The Stolen Heirloom" is a Shrine Quest in Breath of the Wild.[1]

Overview

At Impa's House in Kakariko Village, Link will find Paya crying on the floor near Impa. She tells Link that she only took her eyes off an object for a second, and now she does not know what to do.[2] If Link tries to tell her to stay positive, Paya will angrily tell him that the situation is bad.[3] She reveals that the Sheikah Heirloom has been stolen,[4][note 1] just after she discovered its secret.[5]

With Paya distraught, Impa recites a legend about the Sheikah Heirloom, which states a hero will be able to receive a "blessing of antiquity."[6] Paya believes that Link is this hero, and so she has been researching the Heirloom for him.[7] Through this research, she concluded that "the blessing of antiquity" is an Ancient Shrine that the Sheikah Heirloom must be used to unlock.[8] However, it was stolen before they were able to inform Link of Paya's findings.[9]

Paya has been cleaning the Sheikah Heirloom everyday,[10] so she deduces it must have been stolen late at night.[11] While outsiders are not permitted inside of Impa's House, Paya does not believe any of the villagers would steal from them.[12] With this, the Shrine Quest begins. Paya feels violated that someone broke into their home, even though her grandmother is still safe.[13] Since Paya is afraid of the thief, Impa asks Link to spend the day with her.[14]

Afterwards, Paya will thank Link for staying with her.[15] She now sees that her fear will not help in retrieving the Sheikah Heirloom.[16] Earlier, she checked in with Dorian and Cado, but neither of them saw anyone aside from other villagers.[17] Paya resolves to try and remember more about the night it was stolen, but she warns Link that the thief may still be in the area.[18] Should Link see a suspicious person at night, she suggests that he stay away from them.[19]

Link can speak to Dorian and Cado for leads on who to investigate. They are both confused that someone was able to steal the Sheikah Heirloom,[20][21] claiming that they only let known villages into Impa's House.[22][23] The day before, Lasli and Mellie both visited.[24][25] They would previously visit during the day, but Cado suspects that they have become busy and therefore stop by at night.[26]

If Link approaches Lasli about her nighttime activities, she becomes offended and tells him to find a new pick-up line.[27] Link can then follow Lasli around at night as she heads to the Kakariko Village Graveyard.[note 2] Though she speaks suspiciously on her journey,[29][30][31] she will eventually come to kneel in front of a grave. She is scared when Link speaks to her,[32] but realizing she has been caught, she decides to come clean.[33] The love of her life, Jarod, was laid to rest in this Graveyard,[34] and she still comes by to spend time with him.[35] When Link asks where the Sheikah Heirloom is, Lasli is initially confused.[36] After Link accuses her of stealing it, she becomes upset.[37]

If Link asks Mellie about her nighttime activities,[38] she will be shocked that she has been seen.[39] However, she tells Link that she sleeps in her home at night.[40] To figure out the truth, Link can follow Mellie through Kakariko Village at night.[note 3] She wonders to herself if her husband is gone and tries to act naturally.[44][45][46][47] Eventually, she arrives at a small hut near Steen's Swift Carrot patch, where she proceeds to eat one.[48] She admits that, while she likes Carrots, her husband hates them.[49] Due to this, she sneaks out an night to eat them,[50] but she begs Link not to tell Olkin.[51] She is confused when Link asks about the Sheikah Heirloom,[52] but she almost chokes on her Carrot when he accuses her of taking it.[53] Mellie thinks that Link is talking about her Plum Garden and explains that Impa gave it to her.[54]

At 10:00 PM, Dorian will abandon his post near Impa's House and make his way up to the forest behind Ta'loh Naeg Shrine. Like the other two suspects, Link can follow Dorian.[note 4] While he is traveling, Dorian wonders how "they" could have done this and resolves to do something.[59][60] Though he remarks that it is quiet in the woods,[61] he hears something and becomes suspicious.[62] After he passes over the bridge leading to the Pedestal, he demands an unknown individual to show themself.[63][64]

A Yiga Blademaster appears on the Pedestal, scolding Dorian for shouting.[65] Dorian accuses the Yiga Clan of stealing the Sheikah Heirloom,[66] which the Yiga Blademaster confirms.[67] When Dorian questions their motives,[68] the Yiga Blademaster tells him not to play dumb, as he knew what he was getting himself into when he left them.[69] In that moment, he forfeited his life.[70] Though he told him about the Sheikah Heirloom, he is no longer useful to them and must be ended.[71] However, he decides to take Link out first.[72]

Link must then fight the Yiga Blademaster. After it has been defeated, he will be able to recover the Sheikah Heirloom. Dorian is in disbelief that he was followed,[73] and he reveals to Link that the whole situation is his fault.[74] He admits that he was formerly a member of the Yiga Clan,[75] but then he met his wife, who gave him his daughters Koko and Cottla.[76] They inspired him to try and leave the Yiga,[77] but instead, his wife was killed as punishment.[78] Unwilling to let his daughters be hurt, Dorian used his position as a guard to pass information along to the Yiga Clan.[79] Consumed by his grief, Dorian tried once again to sever his connection with the Yiga Clan and protect his children.[80] However, the Yiga Clan threatened Paya and Impa's lives if he did not cooperate.[81]

Dorian informs Link that Paya deduced the Sheikah Heirloom was the way to unlock an Ancient Shrine.[82] Though the villagers were unable to make it work, Dorian thinks that Link will be able to.[83] He promises Link that all of the Sheikah are devoted to helping him on his journey,[84] and he asks Link to place the Heirloom in the Pedestal's Concave Slot.[85]

When Link does so, Lakna Rokee Shrine will emerge from the ground nearby.[86] Dorian is shocked that Paya's research proved true.[87] He apologizes to Link for the trouble he has caused,[88] but he asks that Link keep the encounter he had in the woods a secret.[89] While he does not believe he deserves this mercy, Dorian does not want Koko and Cottla to suffer because of him.[90] Dorian pledges to protect both Kakariko Village and his family no matter the cost.[91] After this, he returns to Kakariko Village, and the Shrine Quest will be completed.

Objectives

Stage Description
1 The heirloom at Impa's manor has been stolen. Dorian and Cado, the manor's gatekeepers, say that it should have been impossible to steal with Paya keeping close watch over it all day long.

Your best lead so far is the rumors circulating about suspicious figures seen lately at night.
Complete It turned out that the heirloom thieves who struck Impa's manor belonged to the Yiga Clan. The incident was revenge for Dorian attempting to leave the guild of assassins.

After you solved the problem, you returned the heirloom and discovered a new ancient shrine.

Notes

  1. When Link asks Paya what's wrong, she technically has two lines of dialog, depending on how Link responds to her initial distress. Both have Paya say "The Sheikah heirloom..." - however, the branch in which Link tells Paya to "keep your chin up" has the incorrect spelling of Shiekah [sic].
  2. If Lasli catches Link following her, she believes that Jarod is stalking her, and she tells him to leave her alone.[28]
  3. If Mellie catches Link following her, she will call him a delinquent for following an old woman around.[41] She accuses him of being into older women,[42] and while she sees nothing inherently wrong with that, she threatens Link with her husband, who is a fighter.[43]
  4. If Dorian catches Link following him, he will be surprised that Link is wandering around so late at night.[55] When Link asks what he is doing, Dorian initially struggles to come up with an excuse.[56] Eventually, he tells Link that he was patrolling for the thief,[57] but he decides instead to return to his post.[58]
