Talking Timbers are a recurring type of Tree in The Legend of Zelda series.[1] Talking Timbers go unnamed in Link's Awakening.

Characteristics[]

A Link to the Past[]

Though all Trees in the Dark World have a face, some of them are alive. There are nine of these Talking Timbers throughout the Dark World. If Link touches their face, he is bumped away and the Talking Timber spits a Bomb out of its mouth. After that, Link can speak to the Talking Timber. Five of them will behave rudely toward Link,[2] while the other four provide him with hints and information.[3] A Talking Timber south of the Haunted Grove tells Link that he wandered into a Magical Transporter in the Lost Woods one day, which Warped him to the Dark World, where he was transformed into a Tree.[4] Dark World explorers claimed to have heard the Talking Timbers speaking and believed that these Trees were Golden Land sentries who were petrified by Ganon's magic.[5]

Dialogue[]

The following is a list of the quotes said by the Talking Timbers.

Location Quote
South of the Haunted Grove
West of the Bomb Shop
Village of Outcasts
North-West of the Village of Outcasts
North of the Dark World Shield Shop
Quit bothering me! And watch where you're going when you dash around!
East of the Pyramid of Power Wow! I haven't seen a normal person in a few hundred years! Let me talk to you for a while. Surprisingly, the Triforce created this world to fulfill Ganon's wish. What is Ganon's wish, you ask? It is to rule the entire cosmos! Don't you think it might be possible with the power of the Triforce behind you?
Village of Outcasts Wow! I haven't seen a normal person in a few hundred years! Let me talk to you for a while. Do you know about the Gargoyle statue in the village? People say they can hear a girl calling for help from under the statue. Isn't that a strange story…
South of the Haunted Grove Wow! I haven't seen a normal person in a few hundred years! Let me talk to you for a while. I once lived in the Lost Woods, until the day I wandered into a magic transporter… The power of the Dark World quickly turned me into this tree shape… I guess the two forests are connected with each other…
West of the Bomb Shop Wow! I haven't seen a normal person in a few hundred years! Let me talk to you for a while. I heard that using Bombs is the best way to defeat the one-eyed giants. That's all I know!
