"Those searchlights are a real pain, huh? You're going to have to deal with them somehow, I'm afraid..."

Searchlights are recurring objects in the Legend of Zelda series. They are used by enemies to detect Link.

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Searchlights are found at the Forsaken Fortress. They are operated by Bokoblins, and Link must deactivate them to progress through the dungeon. Once Link defeats the Bokoblin operating any designated searchlight, it is aimed at the sky, no longer a threat. If Link is caught in a searchlight while not hidden in a barrel, or if he is moving while under the barrel, during his first visit, he will be thrown into a prison cell; during his second visit, bombs will be fired at him from an unknown area.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

Searchlights are found scanning the exterior of Hyrule Castle in the Infiltration of Hyrule Castle. If Link breaks a pot, the searchlights will instantly move to that location. If Link is in the area, he will be sent to the jail in Hyrule Castle, where he can obtain a Boomerang or Magic Hammer. On the other hand, throwing these pots can serve as a distraction, allowing Link to sneak by.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Searchlights appear in Eldin Volcano towards the end of the game, when Link is searching for Eldin, one of the Three Dragons. They are utilized by Bokoblins who captured Link and took his equipment. These searchlights are mounted onto lookout towers; unlike in previous games, however, searchlights do not move around an area, but remain stationary. If Link is spotted by a searchlight, he will automatically be hit by a boulder flung by a group of Bokoblins. Once Link reclaims his Bombs, he can destroy the towers onto which the searchlights are mounted, and shots from the slingshot can daze the guards, temporarily putting out the searchlight.
