Sand Crabs are recurring Enemies in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][note 1]

Characteristics[]

A Link to the Past[]

Sand Crabs appear near the rivers of Hyrule and Lake Hylia in A Link to the Past. They have a distinct movement pattern that makes them incredibly fast in a sideways motion, but slow when moving vertically. They can cause a large amount of damage with their claws. They are defensively weak and can be defeated with a single Sword blow.

Link's Awakening[]

In Link's Awakening, Sand Crabs live on the beaches of Toronbo Shores alongside Leevers. They are less powerful than they were in A Link to the Past, but can withstand more damage.

Oracle of Seasons[]

In Oracle of Seasons, Sand Crabs are found on the Western Coast, near Horon Village. Like most enemies in the game, they are attracted to the Scent Seed. They typically appear in groups of two or more in narrow spaces on the beach, where there is not much room to navigate around them, causing Link to take damage if he tries to pass by them.

Oracle of Ages[]

In Oracle of Ages, Sand Crabs are found on Crescent Island. Like most enemies in the game, they are attracted to the Scent Seed. They typically appear in groups of two or more in narrow spaces on the beach, where there is not much room to navigate around them, causing Link to take damage if he tries to pass by them.

Four Swords Adventures[]

In Four Swords Adventures, Sand Crabs sometimes appear in huge swarms on The Coast of Hyrule. They do not move vertically and simply move left and right at high speeds. If the Links move cautiously, Sand Crabs can be destroyed easily with their blades to get a large combo.

Spirit Tracks[]

Sand Crabs, called Lobarriers, appear in the Ocean Realm in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, first appearing at the Ocean Sanctuary. They are now lavender with a huge rocky claw resembling that of a fiddler crab. Like in Four Swords Adventures, they typically only move sideways, but now purposefully block Link in doing so. If he gets too close to one, it will swipe him away with its claw. If Link manages to get behind one, it will turn around to face him. To defeat them, Link can stun them by using the Boomerang to hit their backsides, then follow up by attacking this part with the Sword. Once he gets the whip, he can pull off their big claws, leaving them defenseless. At this point, they will scurry away from Link, very slowly sidling backwards.

A Link Between Worlds[]

Sand Crabs in A Link Between Worlds act the same as A Link to the Past, with the debut of their Lorulean counterpart, the Karat Crab. They are also present in the Octoball Derby minigame, where hitting one would respawn all the pots.

Notes

  1. Sand Crabs are referred to as Land Crabs in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past — Nintendo Player's Guide by Nintendo of America[2] However, as the term "Sand Crab" was officially stated in Encyclopedia,[1] the term "Land Crab" is not considered Canon.
