The Lost Maiamais are the children of Mother Maiamai, lost and scattered across the lands of Hyrule and Lorule. When Link first meets Mother Maiamai, she pleas for the hero to collect her children and return them, promising rewards in exchange. For every ten lost Maiamais Link finds, Mother Maiamai will upgrade one of his items (provided he owns the weapon and is not merely renting it from Ravio). In total, one hundred lost Maiamais can be found in the overworlds of A Link Between Worlds, each of them crying quietly for their mother.

After all Maiamais have been found, Link's Spin Attack ability will be improved, and Mother Maiamai will leave her cave with her children to a "different dimension". After this, a single female Maiamai (the 72nd Link saved) will stay behind in the cave, asking Link to wish her luck on being as good of a mother as Mother Maiamai.

Collection
Maiamais are littered across the land, requiring a variety of maneuvers to capture them, such as using the Pegasus Boots, using the Tornado and Sand Rods, discovering them underneath Rocks and Grass, and transforming into a painting behind them on walls.

Trivia
*If Link stands near the lost Maiamai, he will turn his head and stare to where is the Maiamai is at. Useful to find their exact location when looking for them when they are hidden. It also works when Link and the Maiamai are at different elevations.
