"A shield issued to the Hyrulean royal family's immediate guard detail. It boasts a high defense, but these days it's more a collector's item due to its ornamentation."
Hyrule Compendium

The Royal Shield is an item from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It is a Royal Knights shield with a base defense rating of 55 though this may be increased if it has a Shield Guard Up bonus.

It was originally issued to the Hyrulean Royal Family's immediate guard detail. It is unclear if Link, a Royal Guard Captain assigned to protect Princess Zelda was issued one before the Great Calamity as he is never seen wielding one in cutscenes though it is possible and likely considering his position. Despite its high defense and durability, its ornamentation and rarity caused it to be viewed as more of a collector's item in Hyrule one hundred years after the Great Calamity. Hylian shield-surfer Selmie has one hanging above her fireplace inside her cabin at her spot. One spawns in the on the western side of the Military Training Camp. "Silver" Bokoblins, Lizalfos, and Moblins favor these shields like they do other "Royal" series equipment.

It boosts high defense and durability greater than the Knight's Shield, but it is not as strong as the legendary Hylian Shield ironically despite the Royal Shield providing more protection due its greater surface area. Like the Knight's Shield, its metal construction prevents it from burning when exposed to fire or the extreme temperatures of Eldin Canyon and Eldin Mountains regions. However it is dangerous to wield it during a thunderstorm as it attracts lightning unless Link is wearing Unshockable "Rubber" Armor or Lightning Proof Thunder Helm. Its design was apparently used as the basis for the Sheikah-made Royal Guard's Shield though it lacks the Royal Shield's durability due to a structural weakness that made it impractical for combat though it is also considered a collectors item due to its rarity and historical value as the Royal Guard's Shield was originally intented to be used by the Royal Guard against Calamity Ganon.
