The Wallet upgrades can be obtained in any order, unless otherwise specified. Therefore, the first upgrade obtained will always be a medium-sized Wallet, while the next upgrade will be a larger Wallet. The amount of money Link can have on hand is limited by the capacity of the Wallet, so games that feature them often allow them to be upgraded in size; however, several games still keep track of the total money collected for miscellaneous purposes, including that which exceeds the Wallet's capacity.

Ocarina of Time
Wallets in OoT are obtained through the House of Skulltula in Kakariko Village. Once Link collects 10 Gold Skulltula Tokens, the first child will be freed from the curse and will give Link the Adult's Wallet as thanks. The Adult's Wallet increases Link's Rupee capacity from 99 to 200. After 30 Gold Skulltula Tokens have been collected, the third son will reward Link with the Giant's Wallet, increasing Link's Rupee capacity yet again to hold 500 Rupees.

Link begins with a Wallet capacity of 99 Rupees in MM, much like Ocarina of Time. Link can upgrade his Wallet almost instantaneously by visiting the Clock Town Bank in West Clock Town (behind the Clock Tower in South Clock Town in MM3D) and depositing a collective total of 200 Rupees. After doing so, the Banker will give him the Adult Wallet, increasing Link's capacity to 200.

A second Wallet upgrade can be found by collecting all 30 of the Gold Skulltula Spirits in the Oceanside Spider House on the First Day. After doing so, Mutoh's Apprentice, who sits atop the unfinished tower in the plaza of South Clock Town, will appear at the entrance to the Spider House and offer Link the Giant Wallet in return for allowing him to take refuge there. The man will also appear on the Second and Final Days, but he will instead offer Purple and Red Rupees respectively. However, in MM3D, the day no longer matters, as the man will now offer the Giant Wallet at any time regardless. The Giant Wallet has a capacity of 500 Rupees, allowing Link to purchase the All-Night Mask from the Curiosity Shop.

The Wind Waker
Two Wallet upgrades can be found on the Great Sea in TWW in either order. One can be found on Outset Island after Link has obtained the Bombs. A giant Boulder in the Fairy Woods conceals the entrance to a Fairy Fountain, where a Great Fairy will reward Link with a new Wallet that allows him to hold 1,000 Rupees.

A second upgrade can be found on Northern Fairy Island, from the Great Fairy that rests inside the Fairy Fountain.

The Minish Cap
TMC hosts three Wallet upgrades, found by various means. The Big Wallet can be purchased from Stockwell's Shop for 80 Rupees, increasing Link's carrying capacity to 300. Another Wallet upgrade can be found from Kinstone Fusion with Mayor Hagen, allowing Link to carry 500 Rupees.

The final Wallet upgrade is found in the northern part of the Minish Woods. The Great Butterfly Fairy informs Link that she is in need of Rupees and if he offers all of his, she will reveal that she was testing his kindness and returns the favor with a Wallet that holds 999 Rupees.

Twilight Princess
Wallet upgrades in TP are obtained from Agitha, the princess of the insect kingdom, situated in Hyrule Castle Town. The Big Wallet can be obtained from her by presenting her with one Golden Bug. The Big Wallet allows Link to carry 600 Rupees (1,000 in TPHD). The Giant Wallet is obtained after Link becomes a "benefactor of the insect kingdom" by collecting all 24 Golden Bugs and giving them to Agitha. It allows Link to carry 1,000 Rupees (2,000 in Twilight Princess HD).

Twilight Princess HD introduces the Colossal Wallet, which is obtained after completing the Cave of Shadows if Link already owns the Giant Wallet. As its name implies, it offers a greater carrying capacity than the Giant Wallet — up to 9,999 Rupees.

In SS, Link starts out with the Small Wallet, which holds 300 Rupees. However, Skyward Sword is unique in that Link is able to purchase Extra Wallets, which each hold 300 Rupees, allowing for 900 bonus Rupees on top of Link's current Wallet capacity. Three Extra Wallets are found in Beedle's Airshop for 100 Rupees apiece.

The primary Wallet, however, can be replaced by Wallets of a greater size from Batreaux, a demon who is searching for Gratitude Crystals. With each iteration, the base capacity of the primary Wallet is increased.

Other Appearances
start

BS The Legend of Zelda
In BSTLoZ, there were no Wallet upgrades. The maximum amount of Rupees that could be obtained is 999, though filling it was not a concern due to the time restrictions that were in place.

Ancient Stone Tablets
AST is similar in fashion to BS The Legend of Zelda, as there are no Wallet upgrades. However, the maximum amount of Rupees that could be obtained is 99,999. But strict time limitations to the game made it impossible to actually reach this amount.

;Notes

*In The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, the Oracle games, A Link Between Worlds, and Tri Force Heroes, only one Wallet is kept throughout the course of the game and is, in fact, not even mentioned. This is also the same with Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.

*The Legend of Zelda has a maximum of 255 Rupees, since an 8-bit unsigned integer (that is, whether the number is positive or negative is not tracked) was used to represent the number due to the hardware limitations of the Nintendo Entertainment System. (28 equals 256, allowing values from 0 to 255) Similarly, BS The Legend of Zelda Map 2, which runs on the Super Famicom, has a maximum of 65,535 rupees, which is the largest number a 16-bit unsigned integer can hold. However, Ancient Stone Tablets, despite being on the Super Famicom, has a limit of 99,999 rupees.

*In Oracle of Seasons, much like Rupees, the maximum limit for Ores is 999.

Trivia
*The Tycoon Wallet from Skyward Sword bears a resemblance to Jovani's cursed face from Twilight Princess.
