The Oceanside Spider House is a location and a mini-dungeon in Majora's Mask.[citation needed] It is located by the left of the Fisherman's Hut at the Great Bay Coast. Like the Swamp Spider House in Southren Swamp, it is full of Gold Skulltulas that have cast a curse upon the house (though no residents live inside). In order to get to the inner part of the Spider House, the entrance must be blown up using a Bomb. The Hookshot and Fire Arrows are also required to proceed further.

Themes and Navigation[]

The Oceanside Spider House bears a greater resemblance to an actual house than its Swamp counterpart, albeit an evidently abandoned one, full of storage boxes and cobwebs. When Link first enters the house, he finds himself in an empty room. However, by blowing up the cracked wall before him, an underground passage is revealed that leads to a hidden basement with another entrance to the rest of the house. The first room after the basement entrance is a corridor with a stairway down and three rooms. A great library is located on the first basement floor, while the second basement floor holds a storage room and a dining room. The latter is inhabited by four Stalchildren sitting by a large table, while another two can also be found in the library. By speaking to them using the Captain's Hat, it is revealed that they are under orders to investigate the secrets of the place.[1] In addition, each of the six Stalchildren will reveal a piece of information that is required to solve a puzzle in the dining room. When Link solves this puzzle, a gateway will open within the dining room's fireplace, revealing a secret chamber where a Treasure Chest with a Piece of Heart inside can be found.

The most intriguing mystery surrounding the Oceanside Spider House is the presence of pictures of the Skull Kid not wearing Majora's Mask within the house. It is never elaborated on as to why such pictures are in there, nor even referenced by anyone within the house, even Tatl. The only purpose they serve is to be shot down to potentially reveal a hidden Gold Skulltula.

The man who is looking for shelter

Once the 30 Gold Skulltulas are slain and their Spirits collected, a man will appear at the entrance, curiously looking around. He claims he has heard loud noises from Link's activity and then asks the young Hero of Time if he can have the house for himself but rewards him for his efforts. If Link collects all the tokens during the First Day, he will be rewarded with the Giant Wallet, or a Silver Rupee for completing it again on the First Day in subsequent cycles. On the Second Day, he will receive a Purple Rupee, and on the Final Day, a Red Rupee. The man says the Rupees are his life fortune and wants to use the Oceanside Spider House as a shelter from the falling Moon.[2] If Link re-enters the house, the man will now be sitting crouched up on the basement floor, praying for the Goddess of Time to save him.[3] He cannot enter deep inside as intended, as the large gate-like barrier requiring the Hookshot prevents the man from doing so, leaving the main basement areas empty.

In Majora's Mask 3D, the colored masks in the dining room are redesigned to feature a different card suit symbol on each one. The hints the Stalchildren give also refer to the mask's symbol instead of the color. Link can also now get the Giant Wallet during any of the three days, and defeating all 30 Gold Skulltulas a second time will award him a Fishing Hole Pass.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version, the mini-dungeon is called Ocean Spider Mansion.
  • The man seeking shelter is the same person who stands on the top of the Carnival Tower at South Clock Town on the First Day. If Link collects all of the Gold Skulltula Spirits, the man disappears from Clock Town.
    • The man himself is one of the very few residents in Termina who is aware of the impending doom by the Moon from the start of the three-day cycle, alongside Grog.
  • The puzzle order explained from the Stalchildren to open the dining room's fireplace is different per save file.
  • It is possible to exit the house's entrance passage with the Bunny Hood.
    MM Skull Kid Japanese version

Skull Kid's pictures in this mini-dungeon match how he appears in the Japanese version

  • The paintings of Skull Kid within the house has the character with black skin with a beak as his mouth, which is identical to how he appears in the Japanese release of Majora's Mask. In the international version, his face was given a wooden texture due to controversy but the picture itself remains unchanged. In Majora's Mask 3D, however, they are corrected for all regions.
  • The man is the Terminan counterpart of the children from the Skulltula Family in Ocarina of Time.
  • Despite the Oceanside Spider House being indeed an underground shelter, as it is two basement floors deep, like Pinnacle Rock's lowest depths, it does not offer any protection for Link in the event the Moon crashes into Termina.
    • Realistically, some fans claim that if Link did survive the inital fiery shockwave by the Moon's collision course, almost certainly the shelter itself would collapse entirely on top of the hero.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the house itself can be seen, alongside the Fisherman's Hut, in the background of the Great Bay stage.
