Nabooru (pronounced /nəˈbɔər.uː/ nə-BOAR-oo[3]) is a character in Ocarina of Time.[2] She is the second-in-command of the Gerudo, with Ganondorf, the human form of Ganon, being her only superior. She has a second-in-command herself, who is the Gerudo who granted Link the permission to enter the Gerudo's Fortress freely.[1] Nabooru is highly respected by the other Gerudo,[4] who are unaware of her rebellion against Ganondorf. During the events of Ocarina of Time, she becomes the new Sage of Spirit and aids the Hero of Time in his battle against Ganon.
Biography[]
Link meets Nabooru in the Spirit Temple as a child, having used the Requiem of Spirit, which he learned in the future, to reach the Desert Colossus. At this time, Nabooru is already in opposition to Ganondorf's behavior.[5] She intends to infiltrate Ganon's followers' headquarters there, but is unable to without the Silver Gauntlets, which are out of reach beyond a very small opening.[6] Through their conservation, she asks Link to get the gauntlets for her, promising to "do something great" for him in return.[7] Once Link acquires the Silver Gauntlets, Koume and Kotake, Ganondorf's surrogate mothers and evil witches, discover and capture Nabooru, and she orders Link to leave to safety.[8]
When Link returns to the temple as an adult, Nabooru has been brainwashed.[9] While brainwashed, Nabooru was used to lead activities contrary to the values she previously held.[10] During this intervening period, Nabooru is apparently rumored to brainwash people herself.[11]
Toward the end of the Spirit Temple, Link finally confronts Kotake and Koume, apparently fussing over a strange Iron Knuckle.[12] They command it to attack him and vanish. Upon its defeat, the Iron Knuckle's armor falls off to reveal Nabooru inside with the spell lifted. Although she appears to be free at last, Kotake and Koume reappear and quickly capture her a second time before retreating to the boss room ahead.[9][4][13][14] After their defeat, Nabooru is truly freed and she awakens as the Sage of Spirit, giving Link the Spirit Medallion, after regretting her mistakes as a respected Gerudo.[15] [16][17]
When Link ultimately defeats Ganon, Nabooru and the other five Sages combine their powers to seal Ganondorf away. During the ending, she can be seen overlooking a celebrating Hyrule on Death Mountain with the other Sages.

The Wind Waker[]
In The Wind Waker, in the basement of Hyrule Castle, a stained glass of Nabooru can be seen alongside the rest of the Six Sages from Ocarina of Time.
Breath of the Wild[]
In Breath of the Wild, the Divine Beast Vah Naboris is named in honor of Nabooru.[18]
Other Appearances[]
Ocarina of Time (Himekawa)[]
In the Ocarina of Time manga by Akira Himekawa, Nabooru's role is slightly different from the game. She is under the influence of Koume and Kotake as well, but is not transformed into an Iron Knuckle. She is sent to spy on Sheik which results in her combating Link. He then frees her from the influence which allows her to help release the other Gerudo. She also gives Link the Mirror Shield, which she claims she stole a while back.[19] After Princess Zelda is captured by Ganondorf, Nabooru explains that the Gerudo race consists only of women, and that the first male born after one hundred years has the right to be chief. Nabooru decides to fight Ganondorf with Link, commenting that there are some things even a master thief should never steal.[20] After the two battle monsters, Rauru speaks with both Link and Nabooru, revealing that Nabooru has been awakened as the sage of spirit. [21] Together the sages, including Nabooru, create a bridge to Ganon's Castle.
Trivia[]
- Nabooru is the first specific Gerudo in The Legend of Zelda series to be an ally of Link. Another one who aids the main protagonist would not appear in the franchise until Breath of the Wild with Riju, 19 years later.
- Ocarina of Time contains unused text from Nabooru, wherein she remarks that Link is an enemy of Ganondorf and must die.[22] This dialogue was most likely to be used when fighting her as an Iron Knuckle.
- Much like Ganondorf, likely due to the fact that she is a Gerudo, although she does know Link's name as she says it once when she was captured by Koume and Kotake and corrected herself by saying Hero of Time when obtaining the Spirit Medallion, Nabooru refers to him as "kid" even as an adult, due to his youth.
- Unlike the standard Iron Knuckles, when defeated, Nabooru's armor breaks apart entirely and crumbles to the ground.
- Although Nabooru is not in a romantic relationship with the Hero of Time unlike Saria, Princess Ruto, Malon, or Princess Zelda, she does express a possible love interest to Link in that she had no idea how handsome he would become as an adult, and admitted she should've kept the "promise" she made to him when he was a child, implying a fifth female in the love triangle.
- Nabooru's in-game clothing is colored white, despite being shown as pink in offical artwork.
- Fitting her second-in-command role, in the Ocarina of Time (Himekawa) manga, Nabooru, when she was brainwashed by Twinrova, is shown to be a more proficient fighter than the common Gerudo, rivaling Link's skills. Despite this, she is unarmed in the original Nintendo 64 game.
Nomenclature[]
Nabooru is most likely a variation of the Japanese name Noboru, meaning "rise" or "ascend".[23] Nabooru's name, like several other characters from Ocarina of Time, is taken from a town in The Adventure of Link.
