Monster Cakes are recurring Items in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Location and Uses[]

Breath of the Wild[]

Monster Cakes are a variety of Cake made by Cooking Tabantha Wheat, Cane Sugar, Goat Butter, and Monster Extract together in a Cooking Pot. Being made with Monster Extract, the amount of Hearts they heal to Link's Life Gauge will be random when they are made. The Monster Extract will also randomize the strength and duration of any status effects the Cake has. It is said that once one has a taste, they will never forget the sweetness of Monster Cake.[1]

The second Castle Library Book details the recipe for Monster Cake, describing it as a secret recipe of the Royal Family of Hyrule and the favorite of an unnamed chancellor.[3] The book instructs its reader to stew Monster Extract, Tabantha Wheat, Cane Sugar, and Goat Butter together for a short while.[4] However, it warns that these Cakes make one's head fuzzy and may motivate someone to plan evil schemes.[5]

Monster Cake is one of two meals Link can give to Gotter as part of the "A Royal Recipe" Side Quest.[6] At first, he likens the Cake to biting into a Chuchu.[7] However, realizing that would be disgusting and dangerous, he instead claims it stimulates the brain like being pummeled by a Hinox.[8] He calls it an elegant dish, saying he never thought he would taste something so thrilling.[9] As thanks, Gotter will give Link a Silver Rupee.[10]

Once the "From the Ground Up" Side Quest has been completed, Link can eavesdrop on Ruli and Hagie during the night in Tarrey Town. Ruli laments that their daughter, Hunnie, is sick and will only eat Cake, and she wonders whether anything can be done.[11] No matter how much searching they have done, Hagie notes they have not been able to find a Cake that can please her.[12] Ruli states that she would sell her soul to Monster for a Cake to cure Hunnie.[13] This initiates the "A Parent's Love" Side Quest.

During this Side Quest, Link can give Ruli a Monster Cake for Hunnie.[14] She thanks Link for the gift, noting its pungent smell.[15] However, she decides not to complain, since this could be the Cake that heals Hunnie.[16] Ruli decides to have her daughter eat it right away.[17][18] After this is done, Hunnie will begin to run around and play. Ruli thanks Link, noting that Hunnie's health has returned.[19] As a reward, she will give Link a Gold Rupee.[20]

By adding a fifth ingredient, several different variations of Monster Cake can be made:

  • Hearty Monster Cake:[21] Made by adding a hearty ingredient. When eaten, all of Link's Hearts will be healed, and his maximum number of Hearts will be temporarily increased.[21]
  • Energizing Monster Cake:[22] Made by adding an energizing ingredient. Eating these Cakes will restore a portion of Link's Stamina Wheel.[22]
  • Enduring Monster Cake:[23] Made by adding an enduring ingredient. Link's Stamina Wheel will be completely restored and overfilled if he eats these.[23]
  • Hasty Monster Cake:[24] Made by adding a hasty ingredient. If Link eats these, his movement speed will be increased.[24]
  • Spicy Monster Cake:[25] Made by adding a spicy ingredient. These Cakes will grant Link one level of Cold Resistance when eaten.[25]
  • Electro Monster Cake:[26] Made by adding an electric ingredient. Eating them will grant Link one level of Shock Resistance.[26]
  • Mighty Monster Cake:[27] Made by adding a mighty ingredient. When eaten, Link will receive a boost to the power of his attacks.[27]
  • Tough Monster Cake:[28] Made by adding a tough ingredient. If consumed, Link's defense will be increased.[28]
  • Sneaky Monster Cake:[29] Made by adding a sneaky ingredient. They increase Link's Stealth when he eats them.[29]
  • Chilly Monster Cake:[30] Made by adding a chilly ingredient. Eating them will grant Link one level of Heat Resistance.[30]

Trivia[]

  • Both the twin-horned design of Monster Cake and its reputation to motivate someone to plan evil schemes may be a reference to Cole from Spirit Tracks.
