Monkton is a character in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Biography[]

Monkton is an retired resident of Snowfield Stable.[2] During the day, he paces around the interior of the Stable. At night, he sleeps upright in one of the chairs inside the Stable.

When Monkton was a child, there were not many kids who lived around Snowfield Stable.[3] His only friends were Harry and Mary, whom he would explore with.[4]

Monkton was told to avoid the North Lomei Labyrinth by the adults at the Stable.[5] Despite this, Monkton convinced Harry to enter the Labyrinth to test his courage, but he never saw him again.[6] After this, Monkton realized that the adults were right when they said that the Labyrinth is dangerous.[7]

The adults also warned Monkton to avoid the ruins of the Forgotten Temple in the Tanagar Canyon, as it was also supposedly dangerous[8] However, Monkton still took Mary to investigate the ruins.[9] Unfortunately, Mary slipped and fell into the Canyon, and Monkton never saw her again.[10] That day, Monkton realized that curiosity could also be the cause of tragedy.[11]

When Link approaches him, Monkton asks if he would like to listen to a story.[2] If Link inquires about the story, Monkton claims that he has been reminiscing on his childhood recently.[12] Even in his old age, Monkton is still heartbroken over losing Harry and Mary.[13][14]

After listening to both stories, Monkton tells Link that he overcame his grief over Harry and Mary as he grew older.[15] He then states that two of their descendants are located in the stall next to Snowfield Stable, revealing that both Harry and Mary were Horses.[16] While he may no longer grieve for them, Monkton is still plagued by his memories of Harry and Mary,[17] thinking about them even while he sleeps.[18]
