The story begins with Link assembling equipment in preparation for searching the dungeons for the pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom. He encounters a Molblin wielding a magical spear, that when thrown, causes a new spear to appear in the Molblin's hands. Link inadvertently stumbles into the cave of an old man, who sells him a bomb and a new shield. In exchange for a drink of unpolluted water, the old man tells Link that his shield has magical properties. The shield and bomb both enable Link to escape from his adversary and continue his adventures.
