Medda is a character in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.[4]

Biography[]

Medda is a Hylian who resides in Hateno Village with his daughter, Aster.[3] During the day, he tends to the field behind his house.[5][6] At night, he watches over Aster as she sleeps in her Bed.[3] While doing this, he eventually falls asleep in his chair.[7]

When Link speaks to him, Medda correctly guesses that he is a traveler.[8] While he does not believe that there is much to see in Hateno Village, he encourages Link to enjoy himself.[9] If Link presses him, Medda admits that there are certain things that make the Village interesting, such as the only Dye Shop in Hyrule Kingdom.[10] He also points out Mount Lanayru, which is located to the north.[11]

When Link inquires about Mount Lanayru, he shares a rumor that it is the location of the Spring of Wisdom, which was used by Princess Zelda for purification.[12] Due to how special it is, he believes that the Royal Family of Hyrule may have left treasure at the Spring.[13] At least, this is what he would have done.[14] Due to the dangerous Ice surrounding Mount Lanayru, Medda believes that no one will be able to access this treasure.[15] Should Link have the time, Medda suggests that he explore Mount Lanayru.[16] After this, "The Spring of Wisdom" Shrine Quest will begin.

Following this conversation, Link is able to ask Medda questions.[17][18] If Link asks about the Spring of Wisdom, he explains that it was the site of a ceremony performed by princesses from Hyrule Castle.[19] While he is unsure of the details, Medda decides that it does not concern the people of Hateno Village.[20] Next, if Link asks about Mount Lanayru, Medda claims that it is the most famous mountain that can be seen from Hateno Village.[21] He then repeats his statements about it being a hiding place for treasure, but he is unsure if this is useful information.[22]

Finally, if Link asks Medda what he is doing, Medda explains that it is his responsibility to tend to this field, and he sometimes harvests more than he needs.[5] When this occurs, he sends his extra produce to the East Wind, the General Store operated by Pruce.[23] When asked this same question while inside his home, Medda admits that he enjoys watching Aster while she is asleep.[3] He remarks that Link would understand if he were a parent, but he admits that doing so leaves him tired in the morning.[24] Lastly, if Link asks this question while it is Raining, Medda explains that he is checking the Water level of the reservoir behind his house, because his crops could drown otherwise.[25]

Medda has a habit of speaking and singing to himself. As he works, Medda will sing about Mount Lanayru and attendants.[26][27] While Medda is returning to his home, he yawns,[28][29] and he will then mutter about finishing his work and watching over Aster as she sleeps.[30][31] He also sings as a way to motivate himself to keep working, particularly during Rain.[32][33][34] In all these scenarios, when he notices Link nearby, he is embarrassed that someone overheard him.[35][36][37] He tells Link to wait until he has settled down if he wants to talk, since he cannot walk and talk at the same time.[38][39]

If Link speaks to Medda while carrying the Blue Flame, he recognizes that it belongs to Purah.[40] He directs Link to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, which is located on the eastern edge of Hateno Village.[41]
