I'm new and confused!

(four famous Zelda notes) Well, sort of. I've been around the site and need help. Since you are a patroller I thought you'd be of help. Citations. They are my main problem. I've tried and I can't figure it out. I'm sure it is fairly simple, but I miss it. I also have side box problems. On the top left of pages is the box with the info, but I don't know how to add/edit one. All I need is a little help. Thanks... Altidefan1 23:04, 25 October 2010 (EDT)

Hi Altidefan1! I'd be more than happy to help out. Citations are a piece of cake once you get the process, and you can read detailed instructions on how to use them (in all their different forms) here. Here's a quick example of how to cite an in-game quote:

Pretty simple! But that help page will explain the whole process and the different citation templates. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "side box." Do you mean the table of contents?? These are created automatically when a page is organized with headers. You can read more about making headers here. Fixing

Hi Smashbrother101!! I used the Clear template. It's really useful for formatting pages. Basically it does the job of a bunch of <br> tags, and it determines on its own how much space is needed based on what's already on the page (click on the link for more info). Hey K2L!! Interesting topic choice. I think you've done an excellent job coverings the bases, here. I especially enjoyed the coverage of the unique gameplay devices in Majora's Mask. If you'd care to hear my criticisms, they would read something like this:

It needs some grammatical cleanup and a sweep for spelling errors, which shouldn't take too long. I think one issue that needs to be addressed is the length. You're covering a lot of information, so of course the article will be long. But as a writer you also need to cater to the short attention spans of most readers. You can do that without having to cut out any of the main points by trimming some redundancy, which I think will really heighten your article's appeal!

For example, this is your introductory paragraph for the Majora's Mask section:

Released two years after Ocaina of Time, Majora's Mask makes use of the same primary mechanics that debuted in its predecessor. Therefore, the learning curve for the control scheme is nonexistent for thosw who played first the 1998 title, and still low for those who didn't yet. The game has hooked attention for its unusual secondary gameplay devices, which render the quest very different from the other games in the series (though most of the existing primary mechanics are present).

You highlight the fact that mechanics from OOT are present in MM with, not one, but three sentences. If you can find similar examples throughout the article and slim them down, and fix grammar and spelling, I think you're article will look really polished!! OK, I have checked the whole page ... twice (a sadistic and very nasty 503 error message forced me to do the whole thing TWICE =,(). I have reduced as much unnecessary wording as possible, fixed any remaining typo I could see, and made some clarifications. It's just 1,3 KB smaller than the last revision, but numbers can be deceiving =). If there is something else to be fixed, don't hesitate to tell me! Very nice! Trimming an article can be hard, can't it? But it is SO WORTH THE EFFORT to get rid of lines that aren't completely necessary! Thanks for editing my first full article

Just wanted to say thanks I barely did any edits before that, and was really happy that I got to work on most of Eldin Volcano, I want to thank you for fixing everything up for me, I just added like a sentence and a word I thought fitted in better after your edit. I'm not good at references and citations that much yet but I'll get the hang of it can I request that you fix up these pages as well and try to keep most of my original work in it, just cleaning it up and adding stuff you think is appropiate the articles I made are Deep Woods and Lanayru Gorge. Also, when the Wiki are admins think an article is in a perfect form what do they do with it to prevent it from being changed until it is changed again, do they lock it or something? Finally if you ever want me to do something just message me on my Talk Page, just note I like working on Locations, and enemies, and races the most mostly enemies that are releated to fire are lizards same with areas, but I'll do anything you want. Hey, the reason I edited Golo so much was the catagories they seem to give me a bit of a problem and they don't show in the preview unless you did the catagory coding wrong, which is highly doubtful. Hi again! To view the categories used on a page during the preview, you need to scroll all the way to the very very VERY bottom of the page, even beneath the edit field. Kinda tricky, I know, it took me a while to figure that one out too!! As for the reason the category wasn't being added, the category [[Category:Characters in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword]] doesn't exist! (Also, adding extra brackets to link to the game in the category won't work.) To see a list of all the categories, just click on "All Categories" from the sidebar, or click here. Hope that helps!! Numerals

I absolutely agree that we don't want to get into an edit war, but I'm a bit confused. I really, really don't want this to sound rude in any way, but I'm having trouble seeing where I was wrong to make my original edit and then remake it citing a respected source when my claim was questioned, especially in light of your reverting my original edit while citing what appears to be a private website's version of the rules.

I suppose if you're saying that I should not attempt grammar cleanup unless the alleged violation is agreed to be a violation by all experts or the manual of style, then I can agree to let it go or ask permission on the talk pages first.KrytenKoro 16:51, 13 December 2011 (EST)

Progress

Hey master, I have a question I just completed an article for the Rickity Coaster and I think I might of spelled Rickety wrong is it Rickity or Rickety haha?. Also regarding the Cranioc article I am fine that it was reworded most of the time I jsut expect it all to be entirely knew and am quite happy it was my own words just reworded, I added some stuff that I think would benefit the article and add the 2 references that were deleted. Also this may sound a bit odd but ur the person I probably know the most on the Wiki and I wanna ask you what do you think of my progress or improvements I made and any suggestion you wanna suggest to me through out the time I spent here. :) XXSuperXXNintendoXx 20:28, 16 December 2011 (EST)

As for the Cranioc article, the reason I rollbacked your edits wasn't that your additions were wrong necessarily, but when you used the "Undo" button, rather than manually adjust the article, you also undid a lot of proper formatting adjustments and such that Pakkun did. The problem with the "Undo" button is that it often reverts more than people realize. I usually use the Undo button as a last resort (or for vandalism, or clearly incorrect statements, etc) and, while it is more time consuming, trying to adjust the article manually instead of resorting to the Undo button usually has better results. =) I planned on adding your references again but I got distracted. DX

Aw, I'm so honored that you'd ask me for a progress report, haha!! ^v^ I'd say you've definitely improved since you first arrived and are well on your way to learning the ins and outs of this place! Of course, there is a learning curve for everyone, so if people offer suggestions or edit your work a little don't sweat it. The wiki is a cooperative effort which means everyone will always edit everyone's work! But yeah you're definitely a quick learner and so far you've applied everything you've learned to your edits. If you want more suggestions, here are a couple:

1.) Proper spelling and grammar are important in making an article looked polished. It can be a pain, but paying close attention to spelling errors, proper punctuation, and sentence structure will do the wiki good. Also, references should always be added after punctuation, not before.

2.) Proper linking is important too. For example, linking to [[Skyward Sword]] will bring you to a disambiguation, but Pipe Linking like this, [[The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword|Skyward Sword]], will bring you to the game page. Make sure the page you're linking to is the proper one, and if the page you want doesn't exist, just use a red link. You can also use the game linking templates, or the game linking markup beneath the edit field (look under the Save page button for all kinds of nifty shortcuts!).

3.) Above all, practice practice practice! There are lots of subtle things you'll eventually learn around here, but don't worry about trying to learn everything at once! It'll just take time and experience. In the meantime, ask questions! Imitate experienced users! And remember, never take it personally if someone changes your work! That's what a wiki is all about, improving each other's edits constantly to make the wiki the best it can be. =)

Also I added the references back got lazy and just went back to the revised edit didnt save and copied and pasted them so, no worried there. I also remember a while back that I suggested that we need to find the pictures of enemies, places, and characters that had a a significant upgrade in appearance in OOT 3D I think that would greatly improve the quality. I would love to work on that as a project I have the guide, youtube, and the game. Also a high quality camera, I might just get my dad to help with that :). Hello, I again revised your contribution, but I think it needs some explanation, so I'll just say it here.

• I think some of the information you added was redundant. That typically clutters up the article and makes it boring to read, so I removed some of it.
• Both of the references that I removed and you re-added were really out of place. While I removed one, I decided to leave the other one on there because it actually somewhat helps illustrates the point. The last reference about not getting any shut-eye, though, didn't really belong where it was (the point was also already covered well enough, so I saw no reason in keeping it).
• Whether or not they resemble sharks is likely a subjective measure, but I don't think we really need to mention it in the first place, so I ended up removing the instances. To be honest, I think they're just generic fish monsters.
• I don't believe it's necessary to strike their stomachs to kill them, so I removed that as well. I believe I just tackled them head-on, but if you can confirm that they can only be killed by hitting their underbellies, then we can put it back on.

Goddess Cubes

Hey, I have a suggestion maybe we can have like a something like the collectibles page but like a table or template that we list the goddess cubes in each area of SS, and list where to find and how to get them, where the goddess chests are, and the rewards. Yeah, I was thinking something similar! Perhaps the Goddess Cube page could have a table with all the information on it, and then each area article (Like Faron Woods, Lanayru Desert, etc) could have a section detailing the rewards and locations, OR just have an additional parameter on the infobox where we can add how many Goddess Cubes there are (or, we can add them under the items parameter). I'm leaning towards just putting something in the infobox for each area and using the Goddess Cube page for all the location/reward information, because it could potentially get really messy (and inconsistent!) to try to add that information to each page. The table details the Bird Statues that Link can dive to, where they are, and what province they are in. I did all of Eldin and Faron. Got the names from in-game. Commas

I seem to be having a large problem with commas(if you want to see if I did them right or not, check the Horde Battle). I know the rules, but sometimes I just don't know if I should use them or not. Hey there! Punctuation can seem cumbersome, but we use it in our speech all the time. Wherever you would pause naturally when speaking, that's usually a good place to put a comma. Practice is key. But until you get it down, no worries. Hi there! Citing you work basically means citing or referencing quotes from canonical sources (such as in-game dialogue or a manual) that proves the statement it follows. Please see the Citing Sources Help Guide for information on how to add references to pages. The section "I'm new and confused!" on this talk page raises nearly the same question.
