"Locked Mementos" is a Main Quest in Breath of the Wild.[1]

Overview[]

While examining the Sheikah Slate, Impa realizes that it is incomplete.[2] As the device is supposed to guide Link,[3] she tasks him with finding someone at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab in Hateno Village to help fix it.[4] When Link asks about Hateno Village, the Map opens to reveal a marker, which Impa tells him is the Village.[5] It is a small town that avoided serious damage during the Great Calamity.[6] When the Sheikah Slate closes, the Main Quest will begin.

Once Link arrives at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, he can speak to Purah, who asks if he has business with the director.[7] If Link confirms this, she directs him to Symin in the back of the building,[8] but since he is a busy person, she encourages Link to keep his conversation brief.[9][note 1]

When Link speaks to him, Symin guesses that he has never seen so many Books in one place, noting that it is incredible.[16] The Hateno Ancient Tech Lab houses a collection of all of Hyrule's known literature on ancient civilizations.[17] Before Symin can comment on how many Books they have,[18] he notices Link's Sheikah Slate.[19] Excited to finally see one in person,[20] he asks to see its Runes.[21] While he accounts for Stasis, Magnesis, the Remote Bombs, and Cryonis,[22] he realizes that the Slate is missing some of its basic functions.[23][note 2]

Suddenly, Symin realizes he forgot to introduce himself.[25] He is able to guess Link's name,[26] which he explains Impa told them he would be arriving at that they must help him.[27] Symin once again realizes he forgot to tell Link something,[28] before calling out for the director.[29]

When Link expresses confusion, Symin reveals that the director of the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab is actually Purah.[30] In reality, Symin is her assistant.[31] He starts to explains the discrepancy between Purah's age and her appearance,[32] but decides that Purah herself should be the one to tell him.[33] He insists that Link talk to Purah instead of himself.[34]

Purah asks Link if he is surprised that she is the director of the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, not Symin.[35] Before Link can respond, she begins to question him about the Slumber of Restoration, wondering if he had any dreams.[36] While he does not look any different than he did 100 years ago, Purah believes that something must have changed in that time.[37] However, she expresses her relief that he made it through the Slumber in one piece.[38]

Noting Link's confusion, Purah asks him if he still remembers her.[39] If Link reveals his missing memories, Purah will be shocked, as she was the one who put him in the Slumber of Restoration at the Shrine of Resurrection.[40] When Link reiterates his lack of memories, Purah pulls out a notebook and murmurs that she expected such.[41] She makes note of the fact that Link has lost his memories within.[42] Purah apologizes for keeping Link waiting while she wrote, though she calls it a charming quirk.[43]

Purah allows Link to ask her questions. When Link makes note of the fact that she is a child, Purah immediately calls him rude.[44] However, she quickly retracts her previous statement, as she realizes it is a logical conclusion to reach.[45] She admits that her young appearance is due to a failed experiment,[46] which she documented in her Diary in her Room.[47] Due to the event's embarrassing nature, though, she forbids Link from reading it.[48]

Purah decides to return to the topic at hand,[49] that being Link's return after 100 years to defeat Calamity Ganon and rescue Princess Zelda.[50] To help him in his task, Purah offers to restore the Sheikah Slate's missing functions.[51] First, though, she needs Link to do something for her.[52] When Link gives her a look,[53] Purah asks if he expected her to fix the Sheikah Slate for free.[54]

Purah needs Link to retrieve the Blue Flame from the Ancient Furnace in town, which can be used to light the Furnace outside of the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.[55] Once it is lit, Purah will be able to use the Guidance Stone to restore the missing Sheikah Slate functions.[56]

The Ancient Furnace in Hateno Village is located on the high ground behing the Village Chief's House.[57] Link can use a Torch to carry the Blue Flame back to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.[58] Along the path are many Blue Flame Pedestals, which Link can ignite with the Blue Flame.[59] If the Flame he is carrying is doused by Rain or goes out, he will be able to reignite his Torch at one of these Pedestals instead of traveling back to the Ancient Furnace. When Link lights the Furnace outside of the Lab, the Travel Gate outside will activate, allowing him to Warp there whenever.[60]

Inside the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, Purah will thank Link and show him the activated Guidance Stone.[61] Deciding it is time to restore the missing Runes,[62] Purah encourages Link to repeat her catchphrase, "Snap!"[63] Once he does so, Purah will remove the lock on the Guidance Stone to begin repairing the Sheikah Slate.[64]

The Sheikah Slate is automatically placed below the Guidance Stone, which authenticates it and recognizes the missing functions.[65] It begins its repair of the Slate,[66] distilling a piece of ancient energy into it. The Camera Rune, Hyrule Compendium, and Album are all restored in the process.[67]

After the repair, Purah will examine the Sheikah Slate to ensure all is well.[68] Once she confirms all of the missing functions are now present,[69] she suggests that Link take a Picture of her.[70] After taking the Picture, she asks Link to show it to her.[71] She is enamored by her image, wondering who the beautiful young creature is.[72] Purah ends up becoming distracted by the Picture.[73]

While she is looking at the Album, Purah realizes there are old landscape Pictures already stored.[74] She recalls that Princess Zelda used the Camera frequently 100 years ago.[75] As Zelda's appointed knight, Purah theorizes that Link could have been with her when she took the Pictures.[76] Therefore, the Pictures could be the missing piece when it comes to restoring his Memories.[77] She suggests Link check in with Impa about this, as she knew Zelda better than Purah.[78]

Before Link leaves, Purah needs one more thing from him.[79] After he sees Impa, Purah would like Link to bring her Ancient Materials.[80] He can give them either to her or her colleague Robbie at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab.[81] In return, she promises "something good" from both of them.[82] This begins two Side Quests: "Slated for Upgrades" and "Robbie's Research".

Back in Kakariko Village, Impa notes that, while she heard Purah was giving Link the runaround, he appears to be fine.[83] After this, the Main Quest will be completed.

Objectives[]

Stage Description
1 According to Impa, the Sheikah Slate that Zelda left to guide you is incomplete.

The director at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab in Hateno Village may know a way to restore the Sheikah Slate's missing components.

Use the map to find the location of the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab and its director.
2 The Hateno Ancient Tech Lab's director can't fix the Sheikah Slate until the Guidance Stone is operational again. The only way to power the Guidance Stone is to light the furnace on the outer wall of the tech lab with a blue flame.

Carry the blue flame from the ancient furnace in Hateno Village to the tech lab, and use it to light the lab's furnace.
3 The blue flame in the furnace is now powering the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab's Guidance Stone.

Report to the director so that she can repair your Sheikah Slate.
4 Purah has fixed the Sheikah Slate, restoring the last of its basic runes from 100 years ago.

Snap an image of Purah using the Camera rune!
5 You proved the Camera works again by capturing an image of Purah!

According to Purah, the album already has pictures from the past in it.

Where could these have come from? Impa in Kakariko Village may have the answer.
Complete You let Impa know that the basic runes of the Sheikah Slate have been restored.

She told you that the pictures in the album are Zelda's memories from 100 years ago.

Visit the various spots shown in the images Zelda left behind to recall your own memories from that era!

Notes

  1. If Link lights the Furnace before speaking to Purah, she will be shocked by his appearance.[10] She asks Link if it was him who reignited the Furnace,[11] stating he must have come out of the Slumber of Restoration in good shape if he knew to do so.[12] In this scenario, she immediately introduces herself as the director of the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.[13] Since Link is unsure of what is happening, Purah decides to speak bluntly.[14] She confirms that Link has come after Impa instructed him to get his Sheikah Slate repaired,[15] at which point her dialogue continues as normal.
  2. If Link has not visited Impa before this point, Symin will refuse to fix his Runes until he has gotten her permission.[24]

  75. "I knew Princess Zelda had made frequent use of the Camera feature, but this..." — Purah (Breath of the Wild)

  77. "Oh...right. The "lost memory" thing could prove troublesome. But don't lose hope! It just means these pictures could be the missing piece to help restore your lost memories!" — Purah (Breath of the Wild)
  78. "If my hunch is correct, I suggest you check in with Impa. She knows more about Princess Zelda than even I do!" — Purah (Breath of the Wild)
  79. "Oh, yeah! There's just one more thing I need from you!" — Purah (Breath of the Wild)
  80. "You don't have to worry about this until after you see Impa, but I want you to bring me back some ancient materials!" — Purah (Breath of the Wild)

  82. "As if my joy weren't enough, if you bring us ancient materials, we'll give you something good as a reward." — Purah (Breath of the Wild)
  83. "Huh... I heard Purah was giving you the runaround, but you seem just fine." — Impa (Breath of the Wild)
