Sand as a symbolic element
Overview
  +
Desert
It is a mountainous region that composes all of the Peak Province, situated in the GCN version; northeast in the Wii version portion of the Hyrule map. Snowpeak is home to the fifth dungeon of the game, Snowpeak Ruins, and it is mainly inhabited by Ice Keese and White Wolfos, along with two Yetis, Yeto and Yeta. The only entry to Snowpeak, other than warping, is through a small tunnel in Zora's Domain, located in the Lanayru Province. The highest point in Snowpeak is Snowpeak Top, wherein lies a tree with frozen leaves that helps Link race down the hill to Snowpeak Ruins.

  +
Sand is the signature characteristic of certain kinds of locations, such as deserts and beaches, and it's thus associated with hot environments. As in the case of other elements, such as fire and water, sand is symbolically represented by the various Desert Dungeons built in Hyrule and other landmarks of the World of The Legend of Zelda. In particular, the Spirit Temple from OoT is dedicated to the Goddess of the Sand, to whom it shows tribute not only through the exterior, but also within the central and biggest room. The Spirit Temple itself is also guarded by the Sage of Spirit (by the moment the events of the game take place, Nabooru fulfills this role, and also guards the Spirit Medallion until she gives it to Link), and the Requiem of Spirit gives its player instant access to its whereabouts. Other landmarks in the series, such as the Sand Sanctuary and the Sand Temple, both from ST, follow a similar trend.

  +
Unlike the other natural elements, there is no definite race that is associated with deserts or sandy areas, with some exceptions (such as the Gerudo race in Ocarina of Time, and the Zuna tribe in FSA). The majority of these places, in fact, are devoid of any civilization, and are instead overrun by enemies, some of which even use the sand as a refuge to hide from Link's attacks, as well as to attack him in turn from strategic spots. Leevers, Lanmolas and Ergtoroks are only some examples.
History
After learning from the Sages that one of the shards of the Mirror of Twilight is located in Snowpeak, Link and Midna head off to the area to try and find some clues. However, the pair encounter Ashei near the entrance to Snowpeak, who tells them that a beast has been frequently seen in Zora's Domain stealing a rare fish known as the Reekfish, found only in the Zoras' home. Hoping that Link will found out more clues about the Snowpeak creature, Ashei hands over a sketch of the "beast" to Link. The young hero then heads off to the Kakariko Graveyard and shows Prince Ralis Ashei's sketch, who immediately recognizes the creature as well as the Reekfish depicted in the drawing. The prince thus provides Link with the Coral Earring, which is a special lure necessary to catch the rare fish.

  +
Sand as an obstacle
Catching a Reekfish allows Link to use his wolf olfactory senses to pick up the fish's smell, whose stench eventually leads him to Snowpeak Top where Yeto, the so-called Snowpeak beast, is found. Link tells Yeto of that he is searching for a fragment of the Mirror of Twilight, which prompts the Yeti to invite him to his mansion located at the bottom of Snowpeak, saying that he found a mirror piece earlier on. After snowboarding down the mountain using the frozen leaves of a nearby tree, Link enters the Snowpeak Ruins and ultimately recovers one of the Mirror Shards upon the defeat of Blizzeta.

  +
As mentioned before, sand is used in favor of the enemies that are native of deserts and other places. In some cases, however, it's the sand itself that hinders Link's navigation. Sometimes, if Link stops moving, his feet will gradually sink within the sandy platform, which will damp his motion significantly; in some games, sand will always slow Link's motion. Quicksand is a more extreme obstacle that will instantly suck Link within and make him lose health.

  +
In the Haunted Wasteland (Ocarina of Time) and the whereabouts of Twinmold (MM), sand also makes sight more difficult due to the wind blowing it. In both cases, Link must keep an eye for where he is heading to, in order to avoid falling accidentally into quicksand. In the case of Spirit Tracks, only quicksand will sink Link, but all Phantoms (including those possessed by Princess Zelda) are vulnerable to all types of sand, likely due to their weight.
From this point on, Link will be able to find Yeto and Yeta at Snowpeak Top, where they will offer to race the young hero down the mountain and reward him with a Piece of Heart if he bests both Yeti.

Sand as a puzzle device
Theoretical Connection & Explanation
  +

start

  +
To date, only PH, Spirit Tracks, SS, and ALBW have involved sand into puzzle solving. In the former, the Sand of Hours has the magical property of protecting those venturing into the Temple of the Ocean King from losing their Life Force. When a certain amount of this sand is stored into the Phantom Hourglass, the explorer will be protected from the place's course during a given time limit. The more sand is collected, the longer this time limit will be. Sand of Hours is collected after boss battles and some treasure hunt in the ocean, and can be recovered by yellow pots located in strategic parts. In the same game, Bombchus are immune to quicksands, making them valuable to hit switches that Link cannot physically reach to.
The Snowpeak Mountains are not present in Ocarina of Time, but are in its successor, Twilight Princess. If viewed from the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess's layout of Hyrule (that which is the most accurate in relation to Ocarina of Time's geographical layout), they would be GCN version; northeast in the Wii version of Hyrule Castle, beyond the Gerudo Desert. This was an unexplored and undeveloped region in Ocarina of Time, but has now been given its identity by the developers. Snowpeak retroactively probably existed at the time of Ocarina of Time, but had not been explored and settled, and from the information gathered from Twilight Princess, it never really was settled -- except for the mansion, which had been abandoned and left to freeze over and ruin.

  +
In Spirit Tracks and A Link Between Worlds, there is an item that makes use of sand to solve puzzles, the Sand Rod. With it, blocks of sand rise wherever Link aims with the wand, allowing him to move or stop heavy objects, unveil sunken treasure, and rise to a higher platform. In Spirit Tracks, it can even help Princess Zelda cross sand terrain that would otherwise sink her. The Sand Rod is also used for combat, as it stuns sand-made enemies such as Gerune, Ergtoroks, and Geldmen.
Alternatively, it could be possible that had Snowpeak appeared in Ocarina of Time, it may have existed adjacent to Zora's Domain, as it does in Twilight Princess. This is backed up by the existence of the Ice Cavern which, like Snowpeak in Twilight Princess, is accessible from the left-hand side of the area.

  +
On a more general scale, sand's role is similar to that of grass and snow, and like these types of terrain, it may hide items that can be unveiled with a Shovel.
It is obvious that Yeto and Yeta did not build the mansion, but have rather adopted it as their home -- so what are the origins of the Snowpeak Ruins? Perhaps a convoy of Hyrule's exploration team were sent to explore this uncharted region of Hyrule and to establish a base of operations. This theory is backed up only by the mass amount of suits of armor, weapons, and cannons present in the ruins. This was more than a mansion, it was a fort for an army, and judging by the elegance of the fort, it had to have been Hyrulean. The suits of armor even match those found in Hyrule Castle.

Template:Object Sand is an environmental element that has been a staple for The Legend of Zelda franchise. Over the course of the decades, sand has served numerous roles in the games, including an environmental role and being an obstacle to beat.

Role in the Series

Sand as a symbolic element

Template:Element Sand is the signature characteristic of certain kinds of locations, such as deserts and beaches, and it's thus associated with hot environments. As in the case of other elements, such as fire and water, sand is symbolically represented by the various Desert Dungeons built in Hyrule and other landmarks of the World of The Legend of Zelda. In particular, the Spirit Temple from Ocarina of Time is dedicated to the Goddess of the Sand, to whom it shows tribute not only through the exterior, but also within the central and biggest room. The Spirit Temple itself is also guarded by the Sage of Spirit (by the moment the events of the game take place, Nabooru fulfills this role, and also guards the Spirit Medallion until she gives it to Link), and the Requiem of Spirit gives its player instant access to its whereabouts. Other landmarks in the series, such as the Sand Sanctuary and the Sand Temple, both from Spirit Tracks, follow a similar trend.

Unlike the other natural elements, there is no definite race that is associated with deserts or sandy areas, with some exceptions (such as the Gerudo race in Ocarina of Time, and the Zuna tribe in Four Swords Adventures). The majority of these places, in fact, are devoid of any civilization, and are instead overrun by enemies, some of which even use the sand as a refuge to hide from Link's attacks, as well as to attack him in turn from strategic spots. Leevers, Lanmolas and Ergtoroks are only some examples.

Sand as an obstacle

SandVortexTP

A quicksand vortex that Link must avoid

As mentioned before, sand is used in favor of the enemies that are native of deserts and other places. In some cases, however, it's the sand itself that hinders Link's navigation. Sometimes, if Link stops moving, his feet will gradually sink within the sandy platform, which will damp his motion significantly; in some games, sand will always slow Link's motion. Quicksand is a more extreme obstacle that will instantly suck Link within and make him lose health.

In the Haunted Wasteland (Ocarina of Time) and the whereabouts of Twinmold (Majora's Mask), sand also makes sight more difficult due to the wind blowing it.

Sand as a puzzle device

File:Ends of the Earth Station.png

A block puzzle that requires use of the Sand Wand

To date, only Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword, and A Link Between Worlds have involved sand into puzzle solving. In the former, the Sand of Hours has the magical property of protecting those venturing into the Temple of the Ocean King from losing their Life Force. When a certain amount of this sand is stored into the Template:It, the explorer will be protected from the place's course during a given time limit.

On a more general scale, sand's role is similar to that of grass and snow, and like these types of terrain, it may hide items that can be unveiled with a Shovel.
