Kite Shields are mid-grade Shields made by the Rito. Kite Shields bear a Rito emblem on its face, similar to the Paraglider. They are highly regarded among Rito warriors for their effectiveness and ease of use in aerial combat.[1] These Shields belong to the Rito Gear equipment archetype, a series of Weapons created and used by the Rito.[2]

There are three locations where Link can obtain a Kite Shield. The first is in a metal Treasure Chest in the ground in an enemy giant skull at N. Tabantha Snowfield that Link must use Magnesis to pull out of the ground. The second Kite Shield can be found in a Treasure Chest in an ice formation at Hebra Headspring. A third Kite Shield can be found mounted on the wall in Selmie's Spot. Link can win it as a reward from Selmie by taking on her Shield-Surfing Advanced Course and reaching the goal between 2:05 and 2:20.[3] Afterwards, it will disappear from its mount on her wall, and she will offer Link 20 Rupees instead each subsequent time he meets that window of time.[4]

Due to their wooden construction, Kite Shields will burn if exposed to Fire or a Scorching Climate. They will also float if they are dropped in Water, and they do not conduct Electricity or attract Lightning during Thunderstorms. Finally, they cannot be manipulated using the Magnesis Rune.

Other Appearances[]

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity[]

Kite Shields can be wielded by Link in conjunction with Feathered Edges.

Trivia[]

  • Kite Shields are one of the Permanently Missable Items in Breath of the Wild. If both Kite Shields in the Treasure Chests are destroyed, and the Kite Shield won from Selmie is also destroyed, no more Kite Shields can be obtained.

Nomenclature[]

The Kite Shield receives its name from its resemblance to a kite, as well as its aesthetic relationship to the Paraglider. Despite its name, it does not resemble an actual kite shield, instead more closely resembling an inverted heater shield with a concave chief.
