They're certainly not high-priority items, and I wouldn't object if they were removed from the list.

Ummm?

I don't mean psot it ehre becuase this is a Canon page, but is there anywere I can post this page? It is a personal page that isn't exactly Canon. (The only reason I am mentioning it here is becuase it is mosty Image requests.) -- կրակ (խոսել) -- 07:13, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

New Policy

I am just informing everyone that the policy has changed and we've decided to allow everyone to edit images, seeing as there aren't too many applications posted, and that all those who did have good potential. We have alot of images to go through, and these applications will only make the process more difficult than it needs to be, so we want to thank all of you for being patient.User:Steven/sig 20:16, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

lol You finally figured that out. Glad to know. Thanks for the update, Steve. Alter  {T C B H } 01:15, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Need Help

I think I can give a hand with this. So far I have worked with Tetra. There are so many other things that I don't know how to edit properly on the wiki, like deleting the old images. Tip for anybody who wants to start helping, save on PNG instead of gif for transparency. The edges are much sharper, and so it's original quality is kept better. If you have a request, please let me know.Eximius 11:03, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

So yea, it gives me error each time I try to replace with PNG. So I'll need help on deleting images. Thanks.Eximius 11:11, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Eximus. Firstly, deleting old images is something that only administrators can do. If there is an image you believe should be deleted you need to place the {{Delete}} template on the page, and it will be appropriately dealt with. It is already a wiki quality standard for transparent files to be in .png format, over .gif. I get the feeling you need to have a read of the details at the top of the Image Requests Page so you understand exactly what you can and can't do with image requests.
With your last line, you cannot replace a file with a new version that is of a different file extension. You must upload it as a new file, redirect all of the pages from the old image to the new image, and then request the old file to be deleted. Again, you need to have a read of the information on the image requests page to see how exactly Image Requests work at Zelda Wiki.org. You will need to apply (See above) if you wish to do any image editing other than screenshot cropping.
Having a look at that Tetra image that you worked on. It is of great quality, however you are not an approved image editor, so you shouldn't be doing transparencies. Your skills appear to be good, so if you wish, please apply to become an image editor above. Thanks.User:Melchizedek/sig 23:26, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

The Adventure of Link Spells

I was wondering if someone could grab the spell images from this manual (except the Reflect and Thunder ones) and add transparency to them so that they could look somewhat like this image. Thanks. :) Dany36 16:35, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Like this? :) http://s633.photobucket.com/albums/uu53/daltonr6/Spells/ DaltonR6 03:09, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Holy crap, how did I NOT see this?! Thank you so much!! I'll upload them to the Wiki this instant. THANKS!! Dany36 17:01, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
I have the game manual and can get much higher quality scans of the spells. I'll get to them soon and upload them. Mases 22:07, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Capitalized File Extensions

Is there way we can simply not allow files with capitalized extensions to be uploaded? It seems like this would get rid of the problem. Alter  {T C B H } 22:51, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Also on the same subject - what's the easiest way of correcting this? As a non-admin, I can re-upload the file with the correct extension, edit any pages that link to it, and then flag the old one for deletion. But would an admin have the power to rename the file and then do a global find-and-replace, replacing the old filename with the new? --User:Petenu/sig 17:31, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, an admin can completely rename files. And we also have a global replace text thing. So it's a rather quick process for us.User:Matt/sig 17:35, October 3, 2009 (UTC)
Also, anyone can move pages so you could just click on that and Move the content to a similar name but with the lowercase ext. This will, however create a redirect, so if that's done; we'll need to delete the redirect. User:Axiomist/sig 18:39, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Two items for consideration

Firstly, there are some images on this page that are not used anywhere on the wiki. Should these just be deleted, or should we assume that once they have been appropriately fixed, someone will want to use them?

Secondly, once the current backlog gets cleared, would it be worth implementing a new system for keeping track of image requests? Perhaps a tag that could be put on the image itself? This would reduce the number of edits required when fixing them. --User:Petenu/sig 08:19, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

It'd be nice if people could help us decide what to do with unused images. Or even find pages for them. :P But deleting unused images will be the norm. This is done routinely to keep the backlog down, and anyone can find the link to the unused images in the Special Pages tab.
I don't really see anything wrong with some of the images in the primary content, I kinda like the glow effect. It especially would be useful on the All-Night Mask image, I may create a new section here to dump those into(Trivial Changes-perhaps). For now I think the glow (or not having it) is more like a personal preference than an actual policy plank. To me it's still better than the all white space and in some cases would be useful. User:Axiomist/sig 18:39, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
I agree with you about the All-Night Mask image - it looks a bit meaningless on a dark background in its current state. I've put a lot of images into the list because they aren't actually transparent - they just have a background colour that matches the site colour (I use a Firefox extension called Stylish to subtly change the site's background colour globally - this really makes the images with #17456e backgrounds pop out!). They're certainly not high-priority items, and I wouldn't object if they were removed from the list.
I've discovered a new method of doing transparency that works really well on images with decent black outlines (ex 1 ex 2). For other images (ex 3), I still feel like the glow effect gives a more elegant result. But it does say in the image guidelines that the white glow should be avoided, so maybe the policy needs looking at.
Incidentally, what did you mean by your comment "This would make a good image for templates" on File:Linkfairy.png? Either way, it's been done, so feel free to use it as you desire. User:Petenu/sig 22:06, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
I see what you mean, I admit I thought about cheating the transparency by just pouring the background color into the white space before :p But yeah, I was pointing out that the link&fairy image would be a nice template image. Lately we've been using Zelda specific images in notice templates rather than the standard MediaWiki tech symbols. I have a few in mind that I'd like such as Chu Jellies gathering for Template:Merge. User:Axiomist/sig 22:47, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
It depends on what the goal is. If it's just to get the site, as it currently exists, to look good, then there's nothing wrong with cheating transparency by filling backgrounds with blue. But that then puts us in a dead end if we want to retain the option of changing the site's colour scheme at some point in the future. User:Petenu/sig 09:32, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
Ahh, I grouped all of the background transparencies back into one grouping. Apologies if that screws up how you were organizing things. I did it to keep the contents back to the original sections we wanted, and so casual editors don't have to waste time determining where exactly an image fits. All of them are to be done, so no need to divide them.
There are lots of unused files on the wiki, so assuming that some of the unused ones that need transparency aren't duplicates and aren't redundant, they are readily usable, and not necessarily just 'delete'.
Lastly, it isn't acceptable to do 'cheat transparencies', by making the backgrounds wiki color. Files like that need to remain on the list firstly, because as you say, this blue wiki skin is by no means permanent. Secondly, when the image is used in a template, like a userbox, the blue background will be noticeable. As the quality standards say, "Images, unless appropriate, should not have solid colors as their backgrounds, and should be uploaded with transparent backgrounds." Filling the background as blue would come under 'solid colors'.User:Melchizedek/sig 06:24, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Formula for screenshot cropping

What's the policy on images such as File:Gabora.jpg? I've seen a lot of such images on the wiki and haven't approached them because it's not instantly obvious. Should we just crop the top and bottom to the extent of the black borders, taking out the life meter and half of the rupee meter, and leaving behind the remainder of the interface? Or should it be cropped a little tighter so that all user interface elements are removed? User:Petenu/sig 07:04, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, there's nothing written up on it as far as policy goes, as it tends to be a case-by-case basis, and quite subjective. What I go by is this: if you can crop all of the interface away from the picture, without affecting the actual body content of the picture that is relevant to it, then crop out all of the interface. If cropping out all of the interface compromises the actual picture, than only crop as far as doesn't, or to to edge of the black borders, no matter what parts of the interface that leaves. In that specific File:Gabora.jpg image, it is fine to crop out the interface without affecting the image body significantly. User:Melchizedek/sig 09:42, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Sounds logical. Thanks, Melch. User:Petenu/sig 09:47, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Hello

Umm, hello there, if any of you are troubled or confused by my uploading, let me explain:

I'm aware of what I'm doing in the wiki. I uploaded a separate set of images because it's in JPEG. I cannot really upload them in PNG format because that would be too mush hassle. I intended to drop off those images so you guys can make them transparent, and turn them into PNGs, not make them duplicates -- as I was aware of the PNG versions of those images. XD

As for the leftovers, the leftovers are actually unique pieces that I have no idea if those pieces are similar to what ZeldaWiki has. For images that I uploaded that needed a transparent background, I type "temp" next to the filename if it is in JPEG. Anyway, expect me to drop off more images soon. x3 --RAP 00:39, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

See Also?

I think it's a good idea to perhaps add a see also to the page that links to the Articles with Images Requested category. Not sure if this is a good idea or a bad one. I think it would help those articles get some recognition. ZENOX T C 15:56, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

New Versions?

How do you upload the new versions? I fixed the Leever image but I don't know how to upload correctly--Fierce diety 00:40, 15 March 2011 (EDT)

You go to the existing image and then choose the link that says "Upload a new version of this file" at the bottom of the page.User:Matt/sig 06:17, March 15, 2011 (UTC)

It depends on whether you changed the file format (eg. PNG, JPG, BMP) or not

  • If didn't, then you can go to the file's page and upload a new version of the file there.
  • If you did (eg. you made a JPEG into a PNG because you added transparency), then you have to go to the upload page and upload it as a separate file. Edit the original image's page and mark it for deletion by typing {{Imdel}} User:Abdullah/sig 07:11, 15 March 2011 (EDT)

Low Quality Images: Zelda's Adventure

I'd like to note that Zelda's Adventure didn't exactly have the greatest quality of images to begin with. -User:Heroofstuff 17:23 27 September, 2011 (UCT)

"Upload a new version of this file" isn't working

It says that a file with that name exists already, I click in "Ignore warning and save file anyway" and it just send me back to the "Upload file" again. Caru 14:36, 24 October 2011 (EDT)

Try checking off "Ignore any warnings" under "Upload Options" before you select the "Upload file" button. Works for me! --TheHK (T) (C) 15:12, 24 October 2011 (EDT)
It worked. Thanks. - Caru 15:50, 24 October 2011 (EDT)

Ganon Ghosts

I just noticed that the picture from Twilight Princess labeled "File:Ganon Ghosts.jpg"only appears as a file name, not a picture.(This problem also applies to the thumbnail picture) And once I click on it, it doesn't link to any pages exept the Image Request page. Just wondering, what is the purpose of this picture and can I do anything to fix the problem? Darkness 15:18, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

I'd say, add an image of Ganon's ghostly riders that show up during the last battle with him on horseback, champ. Dekler 16:22, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I've played Twilight Princess but I'll never get that far... so, what's the purpose of this image? It's not on any pages except this one... (I mean, I can't get another image, unless I searched for an official one online, but I'm not allowed to do that anyway, so...)Darkness
Actually, since we already have this and this, that file isn't really needed. I went ahead and deleted it. — Hylian King [*] 23:26, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I was just going through the image requests and saw one with no links so I just wondered why it was on the wiki. Thanks! And sorry. User:Darkness/sig 11:40, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

A little confusion

I recently put a picture on the background removal section, this one: File:ReDeadGivingOutFreeHugs.jpg I'm using it as a picture on my UserPage, since my name is ReDead64. This image was removed from the page, and I don't know if that means it was fixed or just removed for being for personal uses. Am I allowed to put a picture up there so I can just use it on my User Page? Or does it have to be images important for real articles? Also, why was it removed and did it ever get it's background removed? ._. — ᏒᎬᎠᎬᎪᎠ64 22:53, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Well, from the lack of transparent background in the image itself (and the fact that it's a jpg file), it kind of clearly wasn't edited by anyone (you can also check the file page's history).
However, yes, it was removed because it's a personal image. The purpose of the page isn't to be a resource for users to help turn their userpages into a quasi-social media page; it's to show what images need to be improved to help the wiki. Since the existence of the "free hugs" image doesn't work towards that effect, it's relatively counterproductive to put on the page as an unnecessary expenditure of time that could be better spent on more relevant images or content altogether. - TonyT S C 23:33, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Hud or Hudless?

Uploaded a few pics without huds, I can take them with hud included if wanted. Which one is better? http://imgur.com/jP8HLCQ,0UL2cvm#0 Just wondering, before I upload more. - PPLToast (talk) 15:56, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Some Opinions and/or Suggestions

Hi, I have some thoughts (may be suggestions to instruct on the page):

- The uploading of pngs to the transparency section should be emphasised more - if a 'fixed' version was uploaded, the original would be deleted, BUT if the original is needed, or the 'fixed' version is flawed somehow, isn't it troublesome?
- Some images in the transparency section should be moved to the low-quality section? Or not?
- File:Fungal Spores SS.png seems like one, probably taken from File:Fungal Spores.png. Can't do better, so keep it? Or maybe not worth it to get better? Or maybe screenshot of emulator (the legal way I think)? Also on a tangent, Mushroom Spores seems lacking compared to the very similar (and info overlapping) Glittering Spores, and I think they need in-game quotes for example too.
- File:HW Green Potion.png
- Also, with the images like File:HW Blue Potion.png, it should say what they want done. e.g. what part should be kept? Only the bottle? The bottle with the circle? Remove the x2 and 'clean' it?
- Opinion on whether this animated-gif needs more work? And whether the low quality and many frames permits erring on the side of removing possibly too much off the edges in exchange for speed of making the edges not look white/edgy, etc.? File:KaeporaGaebora3D.gif

A few questions

  • Do the low quality TP screenshots I see need to still be replaced? If so, I'll go ahead, but from there, would it be okay to replace them on the page?
  • What are regulations / rules regarding gifs? Are they needed, and if so, I can contribute those with transparency if needed. TwilitArachnid (talk) 23:31, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm not so savvy in the image department, but to my knowledge, yes there are a few TP screenshots that could use replacing. Especially any blurry ones or those with JPEG grain. As for gifs, they're allowed. But I believe we're actually turning to animated PNGs though. But gifs are fine, especially if they help illustrate something that a still image can't. - Midoro (T C) 02:18, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
As far as I'm aware those TP images still need to be replaced, since they are still there, and have not been marked with the Image Deletion Template. Most of them are JPG's however. So the new images will have to be uploaded as new files, and the old ones marked for deletion, if you want to change the file type. Which I would be for, since that would make it easier to add transparencies later if needed. I like using PNG's, but there doesn't seem to be rules against GIF's. Though to me, it makes more sense to use GIF's when the image has animation. Also, most of the images will not need background removal. A lot of the images need their environments/backgrounds to help define what the image is showing. My suggestion here is to look at the image and look at the articles it is appearing on, just to make sure your not removing the thing the article is actually trying to show. Here is some more information about how we deal with images. You don't need to replace the images on the Image Request page either. ---Pixel TC 14:17, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you both for the information; I attempted to upload a replacement over at http://zeldawiki.org/File:TP Ghost Soldiers.jpg, a jpg format, though I also prefer .png for quality's sake. It appears from my end, the image has not updated on the page. In the future, I'll upload them separately to avoid this, as you have stated. (Apologies, you can tell how new I am to image submissions.) In the case of animated gif contributions, that clears things up, thank you! I'll not add any unless they are requested. As another follow up: are there guidelines regarding in-game textures? It appears largely different things (models, screen shots, etc.) are more needed than textures. There are no specific requests on the page for any, but I was curious about it in cases like http://zeldawiki.org/File:Sheikah Eye TWW.png . TwilitArachnid 17:02, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi, out of curiosity, did you mean "It appears from my end, the image has not updated on the page." with or without refreshing? (well, you've probably sorted that out already). Also I don't know if you're more familiar with the wiki yet, but it's easier to use an internal link instead of the full URL you've done there e.g. [[:File:TP Ghost Soldiers.jpg]] which becomes File:TP Ghost Soldiers.jpg. Regarding textures, if you meant guidelines for adding to the wiki, I'd say one would add a file in general if there is a definite place for it that can't be filled by an existing file, though to be honest I don't actually know if there are guidelines or not (I'm not anyone reputable on the wiki or anything). --KokoroSenshi 07:48, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Background removal method/etc.

Hi,

I notice with the TFH images here (example images below) the quality is quite sharp (presumably straight screenshot I think, because I don't own a 3/DS), and appears 99.9%-100% un-anti-aliased (like: only a few pixels seem to be the result of anti-aliasing sometimes). So, I do background removal while un-ticking anti-aliasing when using the 'select tool' (in GIMP), because I believe it is most accurate and retains the nature/quality of the target the best (unless I'm wrong?).

With the models currently here (marked with "remove shadow"), I notice that anti-aliasing has been used, and that's not necessarily bad, but I notice comparing to the original image there is some over-removal into the model (e.g. the left knee purple thingy has been shaved/curved off with File:TFH Green Sword Soldier Model.png), and also the shadows look cool, but the oval shape produced is not original shadow shape and in some cases extrapolated (e.g. File:TFH King Tuft.png).

So, I'd like to ask the opinions on this, i.e. what we should do with background removal with these screenshots(?)? (My opinion is the way I've been doing as mentioned above)

In particular, the immediate consequences with the "remove shadow" items here would be whether redo background removal off the originals or remove the shadows off the current background removal.

Thanks. --KokoroSenshi 03:58, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Hey there, I'm sorry that this hasn't been responded to yet.
I think "pixel-perfect" (or aliased) transparency work is perfectly fine to do if the quality is good enough. In cases where the image bleeds and a clear edge isn't easily discerned, it's more acceptable. But I think absolutely, if we can make it as accurate as possible, we ought to go with that. - TonyT S C 19:52, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
