Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

According to the prologue, the king once possessed all three pieces of the Triforce. He never told anyone this except for his daughter, Princess Zelda, however. Prior to his death, the King of Hyrule concealed the Triforce of Courage in the Great Palace and established the challenges that the future hero would need to complete in order to reclaim the sacred treasure. Following his death, his son, the Prince of Hyrule, along with the King's associate, the Magician, began searching for the Triforce. After discovering that Princess Zelda knew the hiding place of the Triforce of Courage, the Prince of Hyrule began questioning her. After she refused to speak on the issue, the Magician put her into an enchanted sleep that she can only be awakened from if a hero recovers the Triforce of Courage.

On his quest to awaken Zelda from her sleep, Link arrives at the Kings Tomb. South of the tomb can be found a hidden passage.
