Wolf Link is a character in TP and BotW.
Eponas role in The Legend of Zelda series is that of Link's steed. She made her debut in the first 3D Zelda game, Ocarina of Time. She also appeared in its sequel, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, and as a small cameo in the Oracle Series and The Minish Cap.

Link is able to ride her in her home console appearances and can control her pace through the carrot system. After cracking a whip, one of the on-screen carrot icons disappears and Epona moves more quickly, gaining the ability to jump over barriers. The carrot icons reappear if Link waits before cracking the whip again. If he consumes them too quickly, Epona temporarily loses the ability to speed up and cannot jump over barriers. In Twilight Princess, these carrots are replaced by spurs.

In TP, Wolf Link is the divine beast that Midna explains the Twili have long believed would free them. Link is transformed into this form due to the influence of the Twilight covering Hyrule. who he claims gave him ownership of the Ranch. At first, Epona runs away from Link again, but once he plays "Epona's Song," she remembers him and trots to his side. Link then participates in a horse race against Ingo, with Epona as his steed, and wins much to Ingo's astonishment. Ingo, now furious, challenges Link again and bets Epona herself on the outcome of the race. Needless to say, Link wins, and Epona is his. However, Ingo attempts to prevent Link from leaving with Epona by shutting the gates of the ranch. This is not a problem for Epona though, who just jumps straight over and out to freedom. From that point on she will willingly carry Link anywhere she can and will run to his side whenever he plays "Epona's Song" on his ocarina.

  +
It is later revealed that anyone engulfed in the Twilight will normally be transformed into a helpless spirit, and that only the power of the Triforce protects Link and enables him to retain his physical form, although considerably altered. Upon entering the other provinces of Hyrule covered in Twilight, Link is again transformed into wolf form, being able to once more regain his human form after aiding the Spirits of Light by restoring light to the area.
Epona can be used to jump across the broken bridge in Gerudo Valley and play the minigame at the Horseback Archery Range in Gerudo's Fortress.

  +
When Link finds the Master Sword and receives the Shadow Crystal, he is able to change at will by exposing himself to the power of Twilight contained within the crystal by simply talking to Midna.
Majora's Mask
In Majora's Mask, Link is seen riding on Epona at the start of the game, both of them still young. Epona is intentionally startled by two fairies, Tatl and Tael, and Link is thrown to the ground and knocked unconscious. Skull Kid appears, wearing Majora's Mask, and searches Link's unconscious body, finding the Ocarina of Time and taking it. Link gains consciousness and the Skull Kid attempts to hide the ocarina, but Link has already seen it. Link lunges for him to tries to get it back; however, Skull Kid leaps out of the way and onto Epona, and gallops away. Link leaps after him but only manages to grab onto Epona's leg. Epona continues to gallop along, dragging Link with them until he loses his grip when she veers around a bend, and he is forced to watch her gallop off with Skull Kid on her back.

  +
Abilities
When Link finally catches up with Skull Kid again, he tells him that he got rid of Epona because she was a "stupid horse" that didn't listen to a word that was said to her. Link does not encounter her again until he makes his way to Romani Ranch in Termina. If he visits the Ranch on the First Day, which is only possible with the aid of a Powder Keg, Romani teaches him "Epona's Song" and gives Epona back after Link practices shooting aliens from horseback.

Senses
  +

  +
One of the most important aspects of Link's wolf transformation is that he gains the use of greatly enhanced senses. This ability, shown as Sense while in wolf form, activates a special combination of enhanced visual and olfactory perception. Visual range is reduced, but Link is able to detect many otherwise hidden things. The Sense ability is notably similar to the power of the Lens of Truth from previous titles, though it can be used indefinitely and does not take up Magic Power.

  +
Wolf Link's enhanced Senses have a number of vital applications throughout the game. The first use, taught by Midna while in Hyrule Castle Sewers, is to detect the spirit forms of the people of Hyrule trapped within the Twilight. Appearing as a floating greenish flame, these spirits' true form can be seen by activating the Sense, enabling Link to listen to their thoughts. As Link is unable to communicate directly with the spirits, this enables him to gain useful information from them about recent events. Also, Link needs to use the Senses to see and defeat certain enemies, such as Ghoul Rats and Poes.
Epona is necessary to enter the Great Bay and Ikana Canyon areas since they are blocked off by fences that only Epona can jump over.

  +
Another application of the Sense ability is the detection of special patches of ground found all across Hyrule. These appear as patches of sparkling light where Wolf Link can dig, usually unearthing items such as Rupees or Hearts. Some of the patches are larger, and can lead to different areas within dungeons, or to caves. The dig ability is always available while in Wolf form, but is mostly useless unless combined with the Sense ability.
The Oracle Series
In the Oracle Series, a nameless horse that looks very similar to Epona can be seen in the games' introductions, being rode on by Link. They are seen either riding in green fields or near a rocky shore before Link discovers a castle, which houses the Triforce that transports him to either Holodrum or Labrynna.

The Wind Waker
  +
Scents
The Epona from Ocarina of Time makes a small cameo in the introduction of The Wind Waker, being ridden by Link while he and the people of Hyrule celebrate Ganon's defeat.

Scents#Twilight Princess
  +
An important use of Wolf Link's enhanced Senses is the detection of special Scents encountered during his quest. Upon encountering particular items, Link is able to remember the Scent, which appears as a colored trail while the Sense ability is active. This tracking ability is vital at many points in order to progress though the game. When a new Scent is encountered, the previous scent will be forgotten. Wolf Link can learn a total of six different Scents throughout the game, which can be of enemies or characters.

Four Swords Adventures
+
Midna's Assistance
  +

In Four Swords Adventures, Link gains his horse in Near the Fields' first stage stage, The Field. If a Link acquires a carrot and throws it on the ground, each of the four Links will be able to ride a horse for a short period of time. While on it, Link cannot be damaged by enemies and can knock Force Gems out of other characters. The horse is also added to the Shadow Battle mode.

  +
While mounted on Wolf Link's back, Midna can use her powers to help Link in a number of ways. In certain situations, she is able to transform her hair into a giant, orange or pink hand. In the Hyrule Castle Sewers, she will use this arm to draw Link's attention to chains which must be pulled to open grates, raising and lowering the water levels. During the battle with Ganon, Midna is able to grapple the enormous beast to the ground as he charges, allowing Link to attack. She also uses this arm to open dungeon doors for Wolf Link.
Clear

  +
Another ability is the Dark Energy Attack, where Midna raises her hand and summons a growing circle of crackling Twilight energy which will surround any enemies within range. Once released, this power allows Wolf Link to unleash multiple attacks, rapidly darting from one enemy to another, defeating them all simultaneously. This technique is vital to defeat the groups of Shadow Beasts which appear from the Portals across Hyrule. It is also very useful in defeating large groups of enemies.
The Minish Cap
Epona also makes an appearance in The Minish Cap; however, Link cannot ride her. She is under the ownership of Lon Lon Ranch, and can be seen in Hyrule Castle Town with Malon, who will sell milk there after Link helps Malon and Talon find the spare key to their farm house. Minish Link is able to communicate with Epona, who asks Link for some Lon Lon Milk.

Twilight Princess
In Twilight Princess, the player can actually choose the name of Link's horse, the default name being Epona. Epona is seen and used very early in the game, aiding Link in his job as a rancher, but it is Ilia who takes care of her. Ilia gets very angry when Link treats the horse poorly or she gets hurt. After the village is attacked by King Bulblin, the horse disappears. Link reunites with Epona later in Kakariko Village. She runs around desperately attempting to throw off two Bulblins. Once the Bulblins are defeated, Link has to tame her and then take her off to save Colin. In this game, Epona can gallop faster than in previous games. In most locations around Hyrule Field, Link can call Epona to his side by blowing on the Horseshoe Grass (and later on the Horse Call) - both instruments play "Epona's Song" from Ocarina of Time.

  +
Midna is also able to warp Wolf Link to any of the Twilight Portals across Hyrule. This ability can also be used to transport different objects throughout Hyrule, such as bridges.
Epona plays a much more prominent role in this game than in the previous games in which she has appeared. For the first time, Link can use various items while riding her, including the sword. There are times during which it is necessary to use Epona to progress in the game, which often includes battle on horseback. Both King Bulblin and the third part of Ganondorf's fight are horseback battles.

  +
Attacks
While Link is in wolf form, he is able to speak with Epona briefly, as with other animals. Her only line in the game is, "Link... Hurry up and return to your true self..."

  +
In accordance with Link's new Wolf form, the nature of his attacks in this form is also different. The standard Bite Attack is performed in the same way as a Sword slice and has a similar effect. The Jump Attack is also performed similarly to when in human form, however, against certain enemies, Wolf Link can repeatedly bite at an enemy's jugular by repeated button presses. Also available is the Spin Attack, again performed in the same manner as in human form. Once completed, Wolf Link's tail will glint in the same manner as Link's Sword, indicating that the Spin Attack can be used again.

Wolf Link also possesses a number of other miscellaneous special abilities. While running, he is able to dash; pressing the A button will allow him to briefly run more quickly.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Epona appears as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

  +
In various locations across Hyrule, Link will encounter tightropes which must be crossed to reach other areas. Wolf Link is able to rope walk by balancing carefully and walking slowly across.
{| class="wikitable" border="1" cellpadding="2" style="text-align:center;"

  +
  +
In other specific areas without ropes, Link is able to use a long-distance jump. These areas are indicated by Midna, who will then float across to show Link where to find his next foothold. This can extend into a chain of up to a dozen jumps which must be performed in rapid succession in order to reach the other side, sometimes avoiding enemies or falling objects.
  +
  +
Another useful ability is that of communicating with animals. In wolf form, Link is able to understand and speak to all types of animals found across Hyrule, including Epona. He will be able to glean useful information and hints from them.
  +
  +
Being a wolf, Link in his transformed state is able to howl, which can again be done is specific locations. Patches of Hawk Grass and Horseshoe Grass can be used to howl the tune normally played, summoning a Hawk and Epona respectively. More importantly, special Howling Stones can be used to summon the Golden Wolf, enabling Link to learn the seven Hidden Skills.

In BotW, Wolf Link appears as Link's traveling companion when the Wolf Link amiibo is tapped in. After saving an amount of Hearts into the amiibo during the the Cave of Shadows in TPHD, tapping in the Wolf Link amiibo makes Wolf Link appear from a Twilight Portal with the same amount of Hearts saved within the amiibo. He can only be summoned once per day.

Development
During the development of Super Mario 64, a discussion about horses began. Though a horse never appeared in Super Mario 64, one was included in Ocarina of Time. The developers did not want controls to be very difficult, so Epona was made to automatically jump over barriers if she has enough speed. To make the experience more entertaining, the carrot system was established, as well as mounted archery. The developers also wanted to include one-on-one battles and horseback swordplay, though such features didn't appear until Twilight Princess.

The scene where Epona jumps over the broken bridge in Gerudo Valley was specially requested by Shigeru Miyamoto. The view was from the bottom of the valley against the light, so the light would break through. A similar scene was shown when Epona escaped from the ranch with Link's help. At the time, the ranch had more than one exit, so a cutscene was made for each. The idea of horses and these scenes in particular were inspired by Western cowboy movies.

*The idea of Link transforming into a wolf came from a dream by the game's director Eiji Aonuma. During a work trip, Aonuma dreamt he was a wolf trapped inside a jail, similar to the scene where Link meets Midna as a wolf.<ref>{{Cite person|quote= [...] once when I had to go overseas for work I randomly had this dream that I was a wolf shut up inside a jail cell. *Unused text from Twilight Princess indicates that Magic Power was originally going to be a requirement to turn into Wolf Link. Template:Character Wolf Link is a character in Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild.

Appearances

Twilight Princess

In Twilight Princess, Wolf Link is the divine beast that Midna explains the Twili have long believed would free them.[1] Link is transformed into this form due to the influence of the Twilight covering Hyrule.[2] His whole body changes and reforms, leaving only his earrings, his distinctive blue eyes, and the Triforce mark on his hand. Though losing the ability to use items, the new form grants Link heightened senses and speed, along with many other unique abilities.[3] In this form, Midna rides on Link's back giving directions, and allows him to warp using the Portals created across Hyrule.

Link is first transformed into the wolf following the appearance of Bulblins at Ordon Spring. Colin and Ilia are carried off, and Link is left lying unconscious in the spring. When he awakes, Link runs in pursuit of his kidnapped friends, but finds a Curtain of Twilight blocking his path. Suddenly, the massive arm of a Shadow Beast springs from the Twilight, dragging Link inside. As the Shadow Beast clutches Link around the neck, the mark of the Triforce suddenly appears on the back of his hand and bursts forth pure light, driving the creature back. Link falls to his hands and knees and morphs from human to wolf, causing him to pass out from the strain of the transformation. He is then dragged off by the Shadow Beasts and imprisoned within the Hyrule Castle Sewers, where he meets Midna, who helps him make his escape.

It is later revealed that anyone engulfed in the Twilight will normally be transformed into a helpless spirit, and that only the power of the Triforce protects Link and enables him to retain his physical form, although considerably altered.[4][5] Link is eventually able to return to his human form with the aid of the Light Spirit Faron.[6] Upon entering the other provinces of Hyrule covered in Twilight, Link is again transformed into wolf form, being able to once more regain his human form after aiding the Spirits of Light by restoring light to the area.

When Link finds the Master Sword and receives the Shadow Crystal, he is able to change at will by exposing himself to the power of Twilight contained within the crystal by simply talking to Midna.[7]

Abilities

Senses
Ghosts

Wolf Link using his Senses

One of the most important aspects of Link's wolf transformation is that he gains the use of greatly enhanced senses. This ability, shown as Sense while in wolf form, activates a special combination of enhanced visual and olfactory perception. Visual range is reduced, but Link is able to detect many otherwise hidden things. The Sense ability is notably similar to the power of the Lens of Truth from previous titles, though it can be used indefinitely and does not take up Magic Power.

Wolf Link's enhanced Senses have a number of vital applications throughout the game. The first use, taught by Midna while in Hyrule Castle Sewers,[8] is to detect the spirit forms of the people of Hyrule trapped within the Twilight.

Scents

An important use of Wolf Link's enhanced Senses is the detection of special Scents encountered during his quest. Upon encountering particular items, Link is able to remember the Scent, which appears as a colored trail while the Sense ability is active. This tracking ability is vital at many points in order to progress though the game. When a new Scent is encountered, the previous scent will be forgotten. Wolf Link can learn a total of six different Scents throughout the game, which can be of enemies or characters.

Midna's Assistance
Dark Energy2

Midna's Dark Energy Attack

While mounted on Wolf Link's back, Midna can use her powers to help Link in a number of ways. In certain situations, she is able to transform her hair into a giant, orange or pink hand. In the Hyrule Castle Sewers, she will use this arm to draw Link's attention to chains which must be pulled to open grates, raising and lowering the water levels. During the battle with Ganon, Midna is able to grapple the enormous beast to the ground as he charges, allowing Link to attack. She also uses this arm to open dungeon doors for Wolf Link.

WolfWarp

Midna is also able to warp Wolf Link to any of the Twilight Portals across Hyrule. This ability can also be used to transport different objects throughout Hyrule, such as bridges.

Attacks

In accordance with Link's new Wolf form, the nature of his attacks in this form is also different. The standard Bite Attack is performed in the same way as a Sword slice and has a similar effect. The Jump Attack is also performed similarly to when in human form, however, against certain enemies, Wolf Link can repeatedly bite at an enemy's jugular by repeated button presses. Also available is the Spin Attack, again performed in the same manner as in human form. Once completed, Wolf Link's tail will glint in the same manner as Link's Sword, indicating that the Spin Attack can be used again.

Other Abilities
Wolf Rope

Wolf Link also possesses a number of other miscellaneous special abilities. While running, he is able to dash; pressing the A button will allow him to briefly run more quickly.

In various locations across Hyrule, Link will encounter tightropes which must be crossed to reach other areas. Wolf Link is able to rope walk by balancing carefully and walking slowly across.

Another useful ability is that of communicating with animals. In wolf form, Link is able to understand and speak to all types of animals found across Hyrule, including Epona. He will be able to glean useful information and hints from them.

Breath of the Wild

In Breath of the Wild, Wolf Link appears as Link's traveling companion when the Wolf Link amiibo is tapped in. After saving an amount of Hearts into the amiibo during the the Cave of Shadows in Twilight Princess HD, tapping in the Wolf Link amiibo makes Wolf Link appear from a Twilight Portal with the same amount of Hearts saved within the amiibo. He can only be summoned once per day.

Wolf Link follows Link wherever he goes and can attack enemies and animals. When Link target locks on Wolf Link, he can give him a command such as "Come."

That wolf is Link, from Twilight Princess, after he steps into Twilight. It's actually a pretty handy transformation. Maybe the Master Sword can help him transform at will... Random

Trivia

 • The idea of Link transforming into a wolf came from a dream by the game's director Eiji Aonuma. During a work trip, Aonuma dreamt he was a wolf trapped inside a jail, similar to the scene where Link meets Midna as a wolf.[9]
 • Unused text from Twilight Princess indicates that Magic Power was originally going to be a requirement to turn into Wolf Link. As there is no Magic Meter in the game, this concept was scrapped.[10]
 • In the A Link to the Past manga by Akira Himekawa, Link is shown to begin a transformation into a wolf-like creature in the Dark World, before he reverts to human form.
