Goo Specters,[1] originally named Camo Goblins,[2] are enemies in Link's Awakening DX. They are intended to be a species similar to Boo Blahs in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Characteristics[]

Link's Awakening DX[]

Camo Goblins appear exclusively in the Color Dungeon. They are initially small and close to the ground, but when Link comes near, they quickly follow after him and attack by rising up and stretching their arms out. Camo Goblins come in three colors: red, green, and blue. Red and Green Camo Goblins are the most common, while Blue Camo Goblins move faster and are able to pop up quicker. When they are to the ground, they are able to camouflage themselves against the colored tiles of the dungeon floor. While they will try to sneak up to Link and attack, this also leaves them exposed, and a single Sword strike is enough to defeat them; however, it is extremely common in at least the US version of LADX for the game to softlock and prevent you from hitting them with your sword, even if your sword slashes right through them when they're fully emerged. In this scenario, you have a couple options: if you can exit the room and re-enter, your sword may begin working again. Alternatively, you can bait them into pits in rooms with them, or potentially even use bombs (but you must get really lucky with timing). Arrows don't work on them.

Echoes of Wisdom[]

Goo Specter
A gooey nightmare that flattens itself to the ground, making it impossible to attack.[3]

Goo Specters are gelatinous creatures that retreat into puddles before rising up to attack their enemies. Zelda can learn the Goo Specter Echo using the Tri Rod, which has an Echo cost of three.

Nomenclature[]

The Japanese name for Camo Goblins, ビヨーンおばけ (Biyōn Obake), is the same as that of Boo Blahs from the Yoshi franchise, although the Japanese name for Boo Blahs is written fully in Hiragana in the Yoshi franchise: びよーんおばけ (Biyōn Obake). Biyōn is onomatopoeia representing the sound of stretching.
