The Monks are a group of characters in Breath of the Wild.[1] They are ancient sheikah who reside at the end of Shrines of Trials, awaiting the arrival of Link of bestow him with Spirit Orbs.

Biography

The Monks are found at the end of their respective Shrines of Trials, whose trials inside are their creation.[2][3] They were blessed with the sight of Hylia and are dedicated to those seeking to defeat Calamity Ganon.[1] They await the hero Link to complete their trials, and reward him with Spirit Orbs once he has reached them. After giving Link their Spirit Orbs, they then vanish. The Monks are heavily implied to be Sheikah, due to the Eye Symbol present on their barriers and faces, and also by their dedication to the Goddess Hylia.

Etymology

Oman Au, the name of one of the Monks, is an anagram of Aonuma.
