Gyorg (グヨーグ, Guyōgu) is a shark-like creature that appears in the waters of several The Legend of Zelda games. Interestingly, however, The Minish Cap deviates from the typical shark-like appearance to one reminiscent of a manta ray in the case of one of its bosses.

Boss Appearances

Majora's Mask

Gyorg title

Gargantuan Masked Fish: Gyorg (巨大仮面魚グヨーグ, Giant Masked Fish: Guyōgu) first appeared in Majora's Mask as the boss of the Great Bay Temple. To defeat him, Link must use either his arrows or arm-fins to stun him, then dive in the water and hit him with the electrical swimming attack. It is also possible to stun him with the electrical attack while in the water, but this is very difficult as Gyorg can easily swallow Link. His attacks are to ram into the platform Link is standing on to knock him into the water, to leap over the platform to hit Link, and to swallow Link if he is in the water and chew on him before spitting him out. About halfway through the battle, he summons dangerous Garahnas to harm Link. After defeating him, Link receives Gyorg's Remains.

The Minish Cap

Main article: Gyorg Pair

In The Minish Cap, the Gyorg Pair is arguably the largest boss in the game, appearing in the form of a large, red manta ray, surrounded by smaller, yet identical rays of blue coloration. Link, at his time, has obtained the power to split into three forms, and upon reaching the Gyorg Pair atop the Palace of Winds, he must locate and annihilate the open eyes of the main ray, while avoiding it's attacks and interference by the smaller manta ray Gyorgs. It is unclear as to why the typical shark-style Gyorg seen in the majority of its appearances was ditched in favor of a more manta ray-like appearance for The Minish Cap.

Other Appearances

The Wind Waker

In The Wind Waker, Gyorg is the name of an enemy that lives in the Great Sea. It is a kind of small shark capable of knocking Link out of his boat, the King of Red Lions, with a headbutt confrontation. It can also attack Link by biting him, should he encounter one in the water. When Link is sailing along, any Gyorgs that encounter him will attempt to knock him out by ramming him head on. If they miss, they quickly outstrip the King of Red Lions before turning around and attempting another head-on ram. If Link encounters them while he is stopped in the water, either in or out of the boat, they will circle him, often in groups. Soon after, one of them will venture in to ram the boat or bite Link. They usually attack alone or in groups of two to five. They can be killed with two hits of the boomerang, arrows, or with one shot of the cannon. Using a Tingle Bomb on a Gyorg will cause it to sink before surfacing as a dead body.

Phantom Hourglass

Gyorgs in Phantom Hourglass appear almost the same as they do in The Wind Waker only larger. Instead of circling Link, they will wait for his ship to start sailing then ride along with it. If Link's ship is stopped, they will partially submerge where only its fin is visible, and it will swim back and forth some distance ahead of Link until he begins sailing again. If Link hits them with his cannon they will submerge and reemerge somewhere else. However, they can be killed with the cannon if they are hit when they jump out of the water.

Spirit Tracks

Main article: Malgyorg

A different form of Gyorg appears in Spirit Tracks under the name, Malgyorg. It acts and looks the exact same as Gyorgs from The Wind Waker however they are yellow in color rather than the original purple. They are much larger than their oceanic cousins, and they reside in the sands of the desert rather than ocean water. They usually travel in groups that range from 2 to 4 when attacking prey.
