"Ganondorf's Return" is the first Scenario of the Ganondorf arc of Legend Mode in Hyrule Warriors. It takes place in the Gerudo Desert.

Overview[]

After Link and the Hyrulean Forces defeated Cia and her army at the Valley of Seers, peace was believed to return to Hyrule. However as a result of the Master Sword's removal from its pedestal earlier, Ganondorf's final spirit fragment was released and his body became whole again.[1] Upon his return, Ganondorf's first objective was to return to the Gerudo Desert, the center of his power. As he arrived, he summoned the spirits of Zant and Ghirahim from their imprisonment to serve him in his conquest.[2] With a whole army behind him, Ganondorf marched into the Desert to claim its stronghold as his own, which is controlled by the Monster Forces.

As Ganondorf and his Force enter the Desert, Zant makes the suggestion they demostrate their army's might. Ganondorf agrees to this idea, and resolves to conquer the village Keeps to the west. As Ganondorf and his troops fight their way, they also encounter Darknuts and Stalchildren imprisoned in cells, known collectively as the Imprisoned Forces. Upon freeing them, the monsters willingly side with Ganondorf and fight alongside him. However as Ganondorf's Forces advance to the settlement, its front gates are closed as the Monster Forces' leading Lizalfos schemes a counterattack. The oasis Keeps within the Desert center are opened as monster troops pour out to fight back. Ganondorf's Forces however are unmoved by this display, and Zant suggests they claim these Keeps to draw out the settlement.

As planned, by conquering the central Keeps, the Lizalfos commands the settlement gates be opened as more troops arrive to avenge their fallen allies. Using this opportunity, Ganondorf and his Forces immediately advance to ravage the settlement. In response to this, the Monster Forces proceed to open the Keep gates in the northeast. Zant and Ghirahim seek to claim these Keeps, however the Lizalfos and Aeralfos of the area grow wary to their presence. In their deseperation to protect their territory, the Monster Forces summon King Dodongo onto the battle field. Zant and Ghirahim however are not concerned by it, and insist that they must dispatch the main group first. Whether King Dodongo is defeated first or not, Ganondorf eventually reaches the Arbiter's Keep in the north where he is trapped as the gate closes behind him. The commanding Aeralfos immediately sends its monsters onto him, but Ganondorf resists as he fights back, eventually defeating the Aeralfos and reopening the gate.

Refusing to accept defeat, the Monster Forces then summon the commanders Gohma and Manhandla as a last resort. Impervious to their appearance, Ganondorf instead sees a victorious opportunity in eliminating them. He hurries back to the central Desert where he combats the Giant Bosses one-by-one, eventually defeating them both. With both commanders defeated, the Monster Forces fall as Ganondorf and his army seize command of the desert stronghold. They then resolve to take the Triforce pieces.
