Template:Character Nabooru (pronounced /nəˈbɔər.uː/ nə-BOAR-oo)[1] is a character in Ocarina of Time.[2] She is the second-in-command of the Gerudo, Ganondorf being her only superior. She has a second-in-command herself.[3] Nabooru is highly respected by the other Gerudo,[4] who are unaware of her rebellion against Ganondorf. During the events of Ocarina of Time, she becomes the new Sage of Spirit and aids Link in his battle against Ganon.
Biography
Link meets Nabooru in the Spirit Temple as a child, having used the "Requiem of Spirit" learned in the future to reach the Desert Colossus. At that time, Nabooru is already in opposition to Ganondorf's behavior.[5] She intends to infiltrate Ganon's followers' headquarters there, but is unable to without the Silver Gauntlets, which are out of reach beyond a very small opening.[6] She asks Link to get the gauntlets for her, promising to "do something great" for him in return.[7] Once Link acquires the Silver Gauntlets, Koume and Kotake discover and capture Nabooru.[8]
When Link returns to the temple as an adult, Nabooru has been brainwashed.[9] While brainwashed, Nabooru was used to lead activities contrary to the values she previously held.[10] During this intervening period, Nabooru is apparently rumored to brainwash people herself.[11]
Toward the end of the Spirit Temple, Link confronts Twinrova, apparently fussing over a strange Iron Knuckle.[12] They command it to attack him and vanish. Upon its defeat, the Iron Knuckle's armor falls off to reveal Nabooru with the spell lifted. Twinrova reappear and capture her a second time before retreating to the boss room ahead.[9][4][13][14] After their defeat, Twinrova free Nabooru and cause her to awaken as the Sage of Spirit, giving Link the Spirit Medallion.[15][16][17]
When Link defeats Ganon, Nabooru and the other Sages join their powers to seal away Ganon. During the ending, she can be seen overlooking a celebrating Hyrule on Death Mountain with the other Sages.
Non-Canon Appearances
Ocarina of Time Manga
In the Template:Manga, Nabooru's role is slightly different from the game. She is under the influence of Koume and Kotake as well, but is not transformed into an Iron Knuckle. She is sent to spy on Sheik which results in her combating Link. He then frees her from the influence which allows her to help release the other Gerudo. She also gives Link the Mirror Shield, which she claims she stole a while back. [18] After Princess Zelda is captured by Ganondorf, Nabooru explains that the Gerudo race consists only of women, and that the first male born after one hundred years has the right to be chief. Nabooru decides to fight Ganondorf with Link, commenting that there are some things even a master thief should never steal. [19] After the two battle monsters, Rauru speaks with both Link and Nabooru, revealing that Nabooru has been awakened as the sage of spirit. [20] Together, the sages (including Nabooru) create a bridge to Ganondorf's castle.
Trivia
- Ocarina of Time contains unused text from Nabooru, wherein she remarks that Link is an enemy of Ganondorf and must die.[21] This dialogue was probably to be used when fighting her as an Iron Knuckle.
- In The Wind Waker, one of the stained glass windows in Hyrule Castle's basement depicts Nabooru along with the other Sages from Ocarina of Time.
- Nabooru's in-game clothing is colored white, despite being shown as pink in concept art.
Etymology
Nabooru is most likely a variation of the Japanese name Noboru, meaning "rise" or "ascend".[22] The character Na in Chinese is a name meaning "graceful" or "elegant".[23] Nabooru's name, like several other characters from Ocarina of Time, is taken from a town in The Adventure of Link.
