Golden Bugs are sidequest items featured in Twilight Princess. As their name suggests, they are insects that are scattered all across the overworld of Hyrule. A child in Hyrule Castle Town named Agitha fancies these bugs and sent invitations to 24 bugs around Hyrule for the ball. Unfortunately, it seems none have arrived, and she asks for Link's help in bringing all the bugs to her castle.[1] She will pay Link generously upon finding and giving her the bugs. Collecting them all leads to two wallet upgrades, each with a higher maximum Rupee capacity. The collection of Golden Bugs is an optional sidequest and is not required for completion of the game.
Collecting Golden Bugs
Golden Bugs can be caught at any time, but their glow makes them easier to spot at night. They are attracted to Link's lantern, making them easier to catch. Some of them may be out of reach and Link will need to use the Clawshot or Gale Boomerang to collect them. When Link is near a Golden Bug, he will hear the distinctive twinkling sound.
There are 12 types of Golden Bugs, and a male (♂) and female (♀) of each type, for a total of 24 to bring back to Agitha for her bug ball. Both male and female variations of a single bug exist relatively in the same area, thus making the hunting for a gender pair easier.
Rewards
Upon giving Agitha just one Golden Bug, Link receives Agitha's "happiness" and a Big Wallet, capable of carrying 600 Rupees at a time.[2] From then on, each individual bug will yield Link 50 Rupees, and 100 Rupees for bringing in both the male and female pairs of the same bug,[3] giving Link up to 1750 Rupees in total. Upon collecting the entire set, Link receives the Giant's Wallet from the girl, a large satchel with a maximum carrying capacity of 1000 Rupees.

Trivia
- The menu description for the male and female snails mention that possibility that they might actually be the opposite sex.[4] This is a reference to the fact that snails are actually hermaphrodites, and so there are no male or female snails. In the french version of the game, the description refers to the snail as Un escargot♂♀au corps doré, directly translated to english as A golden-bodied ♂♀ snail.
- If Link has Golden Bugs in his possession that he hasn't given to Agitha and he tries to leave Agitha's Castle, she angrily mutters to his back, "I know you have bugs..."[5] She won't do this if Link gives her at least one bug, but still keeps some.
- After capturing a Golden Bug, it doesn't disappear; another one takes its place even though Link can't bring back more than one of the same type and sex. This can be confusing, as the bugs continue to make the twinkling sound and thus pose as uncaptured bugs. After Link lets go of a bug he already captured, it will release a Recovery Heart.
