Rupees are the unit of currency within most of the Zelda universe, in circulation in the lands of Hyrule, Koholint Island, Termina, Labrynna, Holodrum, the Great Sea, the World of the Ocean King, and Skyloft.

Location and Uses
Rupees are acquired by defeating enemies, by cutting tall grasses or bushes, won in mini-games, given as rewards, by opening treasure chests, and by throwing boulders. Rupees are used primarily to purchase items in shops or to gain entrance to some mini-games. They have appeared in almost every Zelda game to date, with the exception of Four Swords Adventures, where Force Gems appear instead, and in The Adventure of Link, where Rupees and the like do not make an appearance at all.

This is a list of the characters from Link: The Faces of Evil, the non-canon game made for the Cd-i as a result of a botched deal between Nintendo and Philips to create a CD-based add-on for the Super Nintendo. Link, Princess Zelda, and other characters that are part of canon are listed only with the information relevant to their place in the game.
Most titles have quirky ways of obtaining Rupees, such as attacking Mario paintings in A Link to the Past or smashing Link into a tree. Many games even allow Link to sell some of the items he has picked up during the adventure, allowing him to obtain more Rupees. In Skyward Sword, Link can obtain Rupees by shooting at Rupee Ore found along the walls of Tubert's cave. The amount of Rupees corresponds to the color of the Rupee Ore that was shot. Link can also obtain Rupees by drawing a hexagon shape on a Goddess Wall.

With the exception of The Adventure of Link and Four Swords Adventures, Rupees are included in all The Legend of Zelda titles. The value of a Rupee is denoted by its color, but the value of each color is inconsistent throughout the games. Generally, the greater the value, the harder they are to obtain, usually requiring more difficult tasks. In Four Swords, The Minish Cap, and Phantom Hourglass, both size and color denote value. Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, and Oracle of Seasons specify the Rupee value through text rather than color, because the Game Boy palette was limited; however, in the Oracle games, Link could find a larger rupee by digging with his shovel. The Wallet’s capacity ultimately determines how many rupees one may receive even when finding Huge Rupees.

At the beginning of the game, Gwonam arrives and informs Link that he is the only one who can defeat Ganon, who has seized Koridai.
The following lists Rupees by their values by the games they appear in.

Zelda's father and the king of Hyrule who was also featured in the Zelda cartoon series. His only role is at the beginning, in which he tells Link that peace is what all true warriors strive for while sipping wine. He allows Link to be taken by Gwonam to Koridai to defeat Ganon.

Nicknamed "the genie" or "Squadalah Man" by fans, Gwonam is a Koridian wizard who goes to Hyrule to get Link, so Koridai can be saved from Ganon. He then offers Link advice, and gives him an item to defeat Ganon after Link "has the vision to find (his) house". After Ganon is defeated, he returns Zelda and Link to Hyrule Castle.

Goronu
  +
Goronu (Boss)
In Link's Awakening, all Rupees that are found from cutting grass or digging are worth one Rupee, most likely because of the color graphic limitations on the Game Boy. In Link's Awakening DX, all Rupees are colored blue, except for two red Rupees in the Trendy Game Shop in Mabe Village, which are both worth 30. Green Rupees, worth 5 Rupees, make an appearance in one hidden room of the Color Dungeon.

  +
Goronu is the first of Ganon's minions that must be defeated. He appears as a greenish-skinned, bald wizard. He is seen reviving skeletons as undead warriors and commanding them to "Find the living and cut their vile throats". He impersonates a sleeping Zelda inside of Fortress Centrum, and then attacks Link when he tries to awaken "her", but is defeated. He is later attacked by Link, and killed once again. His name bears a striking resemblance to "Goron", a species who was not created until Ocarina of Time, many years later.

Glutko
If Link has at least 20 Secret Seashells and exchanges them for a L-2 Sword, then any chests that would contain leftover Secret Seashells will be replaced by 20 Rupees inside. If Link does not exchange his 20 Secret Seashells, then the chests will still contain Secret Seashells until then.

Glutko (Boss)
  +
Glutko is a large, green mound with a single eye, his name having been derived from gluttony, or large hunger. This mirrors his manners, and he guards the Shrine of Koridai. He consumes Koridians with no remorse. He is first encountered in the interior of what comprises the nose and eyes of his statue, but Link kills him by making him swallow a Bomb, at the advice of the Beer Guy. Shortly afterwards, he is fought again at the shrine of Koradai, but is defeated again in the same way.

An armored minion of Ganon, Militron possesses the ability to turn Koridians into stone monsters that attack Link by crushing them and exposing them to fire, much like when coal is turned to diamond by pressure and heat. He fights Link, but when defeated, his armor explodes, revealing a fat old man. He is fought again in Ganon's lair. His in-game sprite is significantly different from his portrayal in cutscenes.

In Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, Rupees are the most important part of the game. They act as Tingle's health in addition to being used as currency. Nearly everything in the game requires Rupees, including talking to people. Rupees are also necessary to progress through the game. Tingle must throw Rupees into the Western Pool near his house to cause a tower to grow which will allow him to access other areas of the game. Rupees can be found by defeating monsters, opening chests, or given as rewards for services to people. In the instances where Tingle is rewarded, he must choose the amount of Rupees he expects to receive from the person. If the amount he chooses is too high, the character will become outraged and give him nothing. Tingle must also choose how much he will pay people for information or services. There is no set price on any item, and Tingle must guess how much the other character will want for it. This is done with a sort of cash-register type of interface on the touch screen.

"Sleepy Bones" is most likely not actually his name, and was probably just made up by Goronu.

Rupee Thieves
Rupee thieves appear in several games. When they come in contact with Link they will either cause his Rupees to fly out of his wallet onto the ground (like Thieves and Keatons), or will drain or steal the Rupees straight from his wallet (like Rupee Likes and Takkuri).

Most items in the Legend of Zelda series can be used either without cost or until a finite supply is exhausted. These few, however will deplete Link's rupee supply upon use:

An old wizard-like man who appears to be trapped by Harlequin. He adds a "vacuum" to Link's lantern, changing it into the magic lantern, before leaving the vicinity.
*The Bow in The Legend of Zelda, where firing an arrow costs one rupee.

Link will be rewarded simply for collecting high number of Rupees in the following games:

*Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. After collecting 10,000 Rupees Vasu will give Link the Rupee Ring.

Trivia
*In The Legend of Zelda, "Rupee" was spelled "Rupy". In the manual, it was "Ruby"; this may be due to the fact that in the German versions of the Zelda games, it is called a "Rubin", which means "Ruby".

*The Rupee is the real-world currency of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Mauritius, the Seychelles, and Maldives, but they are paper notes as opposed to the gemstone appearance of the Zelda games. It was also formerly the currency of Burma and Afghanistan.

*The Silver Rupee's low value in Ocarina of Time is due to the fact that its only purpose in the game is as a puzzle element, and not an actual spending Rupee. These Rupee puzzles can be found in Dodongo's Cavern (only Master Quest), Ice Cavern, the Bottom of the Well, Shadow Temple, Gerudo's Training Ground, Spirit Temple, and some routes of Ganon's Castle.

*In Majora's Mask, there appear to be two differently-colored Huge Rupees: one given to Link by a Deku Scrub, and one earned by killing the Takkuri, although this one is not accompanied by text, so its title as a "Huge Rupee" could be debated. This orange Rupee can also be obtained in Ocarina of Time by killing the Skull Kid as an adult.

*In Majora's Mask, the probability of finding a Red Rupee in grass is higher if Link has less than twenty rupees in his wallet.fact

*When using the Salvage Arm in PH, there may be a few valuable Rupees in bubbles. If the back arrow is pressed before reaching the treasure chest and Link chooses to salvage the same spot again, all the Rupee bubbles will be back.

*Four Swords Adventures is one of two Zelda games, the other being AOL, that didn't include Rupees. Instead, it brings about a new collectible called Force Gems. However, Force Gems cannot be used as currency like Rupees, with a few minor exceptions. They are used to return the power to repel evil to the Four Sword.

*In the CD-i Games, TFOE and WOG, Rupees are referred to as "Rubies".

*In Super Paper Mario, Mario has to collect one million Rubees, red crystals that are nearly identical to Rupees, to escape Merlee's Mansion. Mimi also uses Rubees as weapons when Mario fights her in Sammer's Kingdom.

**Flipside Tokens from the same game also strongly resemble Rupees.

*In Animal Crossing: Wild World , certain dressers and cabinets will read "You found 10 Rupees! Too bad it's useless in this town." when opened.

*In The Wind Waker and OOT3D, Rupees are translucent. In all other games, Rupees are opaque.

Generic, nameless residents of Koradai who are only seen in Gwonam's introductions of the Ganon's minions. In these scenes, they are shown being turned into monsters by Harlequin after losing all of their rubies, having their souls replaced and turned into pig monsters by Lupay, "hardened with fire" and being transformed into Armos by Militron, and eaten by Glutko. Since they are not seen elsewhere in the game, it can be presumed that they have all been killed or turned into monsters, who would likely have been killed by Link. Revision as of 20:31, 25 November 2013

Link

Main article: Link

At the beginning of the game, Gwonam arrives and informs Link that he is the only one who can defeat Ganon, who has seized Koridai.

Princess Zelda

Main article: Princess Zelda

Zelda, like Link, is very similar to her canonical incarnation, although somewhat bratty and childish. In the beginning, she refuses to kiss Link, and is later kidnapped by Ganon.

Ganon

Main article: Ganon

Ganon is portrayed in his "evil boar" form although green rather than blue, and appearing to be a wizard, similar to his cartoon version, and has ordered his minions to seize the Island of Koridai.

King Harkinian

Main article: King Harkinian

Zelda's father and the king of Hyrule who was also featured in the Zelda cartoon series. His only role is at the beginning, in which he tells Link that peace is what all true warriors strive for while sipping wine. He allows Link to be taken by Gwonam to Koridai to defeat Ganon.

Gwonam

Main article: Gwonam

Nicknamed "the genie" or "Squadalah Man" by fans, Gwonam is a Koridian wizard who goes to Hyrule to get Link, so Koridai can be saved from Ganon. He then offers Link advice, and gives him an item to defeat Ganon after Link "has the vision to find (his) house". After Ganon is defeated, he returns Zelda and Link to Hyrule Castle.

Goronu

Goronu
Main article: Goronu (Boss)

Goronu is the first of Ganon's minions that must be defeated. He appears as a greenish-skinned, bald wizard. He is seen reviving skeletons as undead warriors and commanding them to "Find the living and cut their vile throats". He impersonates a sleeping Zelda inside of Fortress Centrum, and then attacks Link when he tries to awaken "her", but is defeated. He is later attacked by Link, and killed once again. His name bears a striking resemblance to "Goron", a species who was not created until Ocarina of Time, many years later.

Glutko

Main article: Glutko (Boss)

Glutko is a large, green mound with a single eye, his name having been derived from gluttony, or large hunger. This mirrors his manners, and he guards the Shrine of Koridai. He consumes Koridians with no remorse. He is first encountered in the interior of what comprises the nose and eyes of his statue, but Link kills him by making him swallow a Bomb, at the advice of the Beer Guy. Shortly afterwards, he is fought again at the shrine of Koradai, but is defeated again in the same way.

Militron

Militron
Main article: Militron (Boss)

An armored minion of Ganon, Militron possesses the ability to turn Koridians into stone monsters that attack Link by crushing them and exposing them to fire, much like when coal is turned to diamond by pressure and heat. He fights Link, but when defeated, his armor explodes, revealing a fat old man. He is fought again in Ganon's lair. His in-game sprite is significantly different from his portrayal in cutscenes.

Harlequin

Harlequin
Main article: Harlequin

An anthropomorphic pig, Harlequin is a gambler who turns Koridians that lose all of their rubees while gambling at his casino into his minions with a strange, yellow bubble that he also uses to teleport. Link defeats him, and he deflates like a balloon. He is fought again in Lupay's area.

Lupay

Lupay
Main article: Lupay (Boss)

A wolfgirl with the ability to turn Koridians into monsters using a rubee that "replaces (their) soul(s)", Lupay is called "the most dangerous of Ganon's minions" by Gwonam. She possesses a third eye, but is defeated by Link when he deflects her shots with his mirror shield (in a manner similar to Wizzrobe from Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon), fading away in a strange white light and most likely dying. She is the only major boss in the game, other than Ganon himself, who is only fought once.

Morshu

Main article: Morshu

Morshu is a friendly and obese shopkeeper who lives in Goronu (the area). He sells Link rope, lamp oil, and bombs for a price. He is occasionally mistaken as Goronu himself on the internet, and is affectionately referred to as "the Shopkeep" by fans.

Ice Queen

Ice Queen

A blue-skinned woman who lives in the frozen area of Sergion Caves, the Ice Queen is a powerful witch who sends Link to Fortress Centrum to acquire the "Treasure of Death", which turns out to be a "reflecting crystal". Once he obtains it and gives it to her, she enchants his shield with the crystal, so that it "curses the curser with twice the curse".

Frozen Woman

An inhabitant of Nortinka, she happened to be standing in a fountain, which was frozen by Ganon. She can still speak, and at her urging, Link uses a Firestone to free her. She gives him some Water of Life, but doesn't move away from the fountain, and freezes again, this time apparently beyond Link's help.

Fairies

Two Fairies

There are two fairies who live in the woods in Spearfish Falls, and who name Link as their hero, giving him support, Life Hearts, and bottles of Water of Life.

Old Man

Old Lighthouse Man

An elderly and oddly-voiced man who lives in Toyku Lighthouse, he gives Link a lantern, claiming that "It's mighty dark with all the evil about."

Old Witch

A witch who lives in Koridai, she turns one of Link's gloves into the Glove of Power once he gives her the grapple berries she asks for. She says that she is old and ugly, but still knows a few tricks.

Anutu

An old man, the fisherman cheers Link on while weaving a net. He also catches a large crab while fishing, the biggest one he has ever caught. Link remarks that it is a Gohma, and the fisherman then praises him for his wisdom, giving him the Sword of Power, which can shoot energy beams.

Beer Guy

A man who drinks beer and eats a chicken leg in a house literally right next to the face of Glutko, he remarks that Link shouldn't fight Glutko, but feed him "somethin' spicy". Link acts on this information, and throws a bomb down Glutko's gullet.

Smith

Faces of Evil Smith

A sunburnt man who is chained to a cliff wall who is the fat girl's father. He asks Link to free him, for the Arpagos of the area are driving him insane. Link frees him, and then the Smith enhances his sword with a Fire Diamond, giving the ability to shoot sword beams regardless of how many hearts Link has.

Hamsha

An enigmatic character, she is a fat woman who says something along the lines of "Dairas came straight from the crater till I boarded the vent. Used a skull for a latch and not one Dairas figured it out!" What she means is up for speculation. She serves absolutely no purpose story-wise, and does not bestow Link any item or power-up, unlike most other characters in the game.

Fat Woman

A large woman, her necklace was stolen by the Gleeok, and she sent Link to recover it. In return, she gave Link a bottle and a kiss. She appears to unnerve Link slightly, probably due to her quasi-romantic advances, and was also married, but she claims her husband was turned into a monster.

Ipo

Ipo

An old woman living in Nortinka who is "the Reader". Early in the game, she offers to read the Book of Koridai to Link, and once he gives it to her after obtaining it, reveals the Book itself is enough to defeat Ganon (and also the only way).

Sleepy Bones

Sleepy Bones

A skeleton warrior that is awoken by Goronu to "find the living and cut their vile throats". Presumably among those destroyed by Link. The scene in which he appears is the only one of Gwonam's boss introductions that does not feature generic Koridians, although it can be assumed that he was one before he died. "Sleepy Bones" is most likely not actually his name, and was probably just made up by Goronu.

Fat Girl

Fat Girl

A girl imprisoned aboard a smashed ship. She proclaims Link her hero and gives him a huge, mushy kiss, and almost crushes him in a bearhug, while telling him to rescue her father, the smith. She then tells him to "have a heart", and means it literally: he receives a Life Heart from her.

Astronomer

Astronomer

An old wizard-like man who appears to be trapped by Harlequin. He adds a "vacuum" to Link's lantern, changing it into the magic lantern, before leaving the vicinity.

Generic Koridians

Generic Koridians

Generic, nameless residents of Koradai who are only seen in Gwonam's introductions of the Ganon's minions. In these scenes, they are shown being turned into monsters by Harlequin after losing all of their rubies, having their souls replaced and turned into pig monsters by Lupay, "hardened with fire" and being transformed into Armos by Militron, and eaten by Glutko. Since they are not seen elsewhere in the game, it can be presumed that they have all been killed or turned into monsters, who would likely have been killed by Link. However, it is probable that all remaining ones were turned back into human form after Link defeats Ganon. They serve no practical function in the game.
