"Father and Daughter" is the twelfth Recovered Memory in Breath of the Wild.[1]

Overview[]

The "Father and Daughter" Recovered Memory is unlocked on the bridge connecting Zelda's room and her study in Hyrule Castle. While walking on the bridge with Link, Zelda observes a Guardian Stalker being tested in the Hyrule Castle Courtyard below. She notes that it is incredible they can actually control the Guardians now,[2] and she is confident that they will soon know everything they need to about them and be ready for Calamity Ganon.[3]

The two are interrupted by the arrival of her father, King Rhoam, who asks Zelda what she is doing out here.[4] Link kneels behind Zelda as the king walks out of Zelda's room. Zelda responds that she was assessing the results of the Guardian experiment, and she shares her belief they could be useful in the fight against Calamity Ganon.[5] However, King Rhoam cuts her off, stating he already knows that.[6] He reminds Zelda that she has a duty as a princess that has been unfulfilled.[7]

King Rhoam asks Zelda when she is going to stop treating the Calamity as a childish game.[8] Zelda tries to reason with him that she is doing the best she can to awaken the power to seal away Ganon, revealing that she recently visited the Spring of Courage to offer her prayers to the Goddess The Goddess Hylia.[9] But King Rhoam dismisses this as well, saying she is wasting her time at Hyrule Castle and that she needs to dedicate every moment she has to her training.[10] He tells her she needs to be single-minded in unlocking her sealing power.[11] It will not ever matter if Link beats Ganon if she cannot seal him. Zelda counters that she already is, but she feels there is nothing more she can do.[12]

Zelda reveals to her father her hope that researching the Guardians can be an alternative if she is unable to awaken her powers.[13] King Rhoam states he won't take any more excuses from Zelda and that she needs to stop running away from her duty.[14] He invokes his power as the king to forbid her from continuing with her research into Ancient Technology and commands her to focus on her training.[15]

King Rhoam overlooks the Guardian experiment as he asks Zelda if she knows how the gossip mongers speak of her.[16] Even Zelda does not know, he says they call her the heir to a throne of nothing but failure.[17] His words clearly hurt Zelda, and she is only able to breathe a shaky sigh. So King Rhoam tells Zelda that it is her destiny to prove them wrong and asks if she understands.[18] Zelda responds that she does, of course.[19] The king then walks back into the castle, leaving Zelda and Link on the bridge.
