— Description in A Link Between Worlds

The Ice Rod is a weapon appearing exclusively in A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds.

Uses

The Ice Rod is very similar to another weapon that appeared in the same game, the Fire Rod. This blue rod, however, harnesses the power of Ice and launches freezing balls of ice when used.

Appearances and Locations

A Link to the Past

In Template:ALTTP, the Ice Rod is located in the Ice Cave to the east of Lake Hylia. Link must use a Bomb to gain access to the cave. When used as a weapon, the Ice Rod can permanently freeze foes in a block of ice but can also instantly defeat some other enemies. Another object, the Ether Medallion, has a very similar effect to this. Unlike the Fire Rod which can be used as both a weapon and to light unreachable torches, the Ice Rod can only function as a strong weapon. It is required in order to beat Trinexx, the boss of Turtle Rock.

Like the Fire Rod, the Ice Rod also uses up energy from the Magic Meter, thus Link can only use this item a few times before needing to replenish his magic energy. Fortunately, a frozen enemy that is smashed with the Magic Hammer will often leave behind a magic refill.

The Ice Rod is particularly effective against the Lanmolas boss, as one shot can dish out enough damage as four normal sword swings.

A Link Between Worlds

The Ice Rod returns in A Link Between Worlds, functioning differently from A Link to the Past, as now the Rod drops one ice block in front of Link, instead of being fired in a straight direction, and is able to freeze foes solid. It is obtained from Ravio's Shop at any point in the game to rent( 100 rupees) or to buy (1200 rupees; 800 if it is the first item bought), and is essential in beating Turtle Rock.

The Ice Rod can be upgraded to the Nice Ice Rod by buying the Ice Rod and giving ten Lost Maiamais to Mother Maiamai. The Nice Ice Rod now drops four ice blocks in a "diamond" shape, though each block is no more powerful than the original one.

Trivia

  • Because Bombs can be purchased very early in A Link to the Past, Link can get this weapon even before entering the first dungeon.
  • The Ice Rod is the only equipment item in the Zelda series that appears in multiple titles, is required to beat the game, and not found in a dungeon.
  • In both games, the Ice Rod is only needed in one dungeon, Turtle Rock.
