Zelda Wiki

Zelda Wiki (ZW) is a collaborative project between numerous Zelda sites with the mission to become the definitive wiki-based Zelda source, by bringing together an abundance of Zelda websites, instead of having many smaller wikis scattered across the internet. It is currently run by wiki-farm Fandom.

Originally started by users of Zelda Universe, Zelda Wiki aims to act as a hub for information on The Legend of Zelda series — created by users for users, using the anyone-can-edit wiki software. Eventually, it grew out of its Zelda Universe roots and attracted the attention and collaboration of many websites throughout the internet, all with the same goal: To provide free, open, in-depth information about The Legend of Zelda series.

History[]

The original Zelda Universe Wiki (ZUW) was created as an "act of boredom" in April 2005. User:Yami and User:GoldenChaos suggested the idea in the ZU chat room, where it was created and assembled. The ZUW was quickly filled with information, not only about The Legend of Zelda series, but also about Zelda Universe and its community. It was also to be used to host Zelda Universe's Zelda Encyclopedia. On an older version of ZU, the encyclopedia existed as a list of words from The Legend of Zelda series with short definitions; with the help of the ZUW, the Zelda Encyclopedia expanded and became much more detailed as well. The Zelda Universe Wiki served Zelda Universe for over a year, before it crashed during a server move.

In September 2006 the Wiki was moved to another new server, with a new philosophy and under a new name. The name initially chosen was The Zelda Effect (TZE),[2] however this was quickly changed to Zelda Wiki.org (ZW.org).[3] The site was run at the time by the wiki's admin team, as well as the masterminds, a group of webmasters from each accepted fansite.

Quality standards at Zelda Wiki are maintained through the Admin team, who ensure that every edit is checked (or "patrolled"). Patrolling began July 8, 2007 when revision 42608 was marked as patrolled.[4] The practice of patrolling has continued ever since then.

On January 17, 2011, members of the wiki voted on a name change where it was decided that Zelda Wiki.org (ZW.org) would simply become Zelda Wiki (ZW).

Zelda Wiki was soon transferred to Curse Inc.'s Gamepedia service on March 8, 2017, changing its domain to zelda.gamepedia.com and with many users having to migrate to Gamepedia accounts. On December 12, 2018, Gamepedia was acquired by Fandom, Inc. and went under common ownership with Zeldapedia. The latter merged with Zelda Wiki on June 15, 2019; two years later the wiki migrated its domain once again to zelda.fandom.com.[5][6][7]

On December 11, 2022, SpoilerGoblin was put in charge of the wiki.

On February 20, 2024, the coverage guidelines were loosened to allow more coverage on Nintendo, Super Smash Bros., and even its partner Mario franchise, to an extent.

With the site following a period of inactivity, Gematarix adopted the wiki on April 22, 2024. Almost immediately afterward, Gematarix changed the light theme to go from light blue and dark blue to light green and dark green, respectively, due to green being more evocative of The Legend of Zelda franchise at large.

Gematarix's first hire took place on June 6, when he promoted Lordgeorge16 to help combat vandalism and spam on the wiki.

On November 15, 2024, the Zelda Wiki received a Discussions, with two new thread mods, Twineee (who also had the honor of making the very first post on Discussions) and TriforceTyler. About a month later, on December 18, Gematarix promoted a third thread moderator, Commander Linus. The following year, on February 26, 2025, Gematarix promoted a fourth chat moderator, Sasquatch Who Happens To Be Sneaky.

Gematarix discontinued affiliation with the wiki's Discord server on April 10, 2025, for a few reasons: encourage community participation in the already active Discussions, because several other The Legend of Zelda-focused servers exist on Discord, and from personally disliking the platform and its centralization of communities overall (a sentiment similarly shared by a few users whom he has hired).

On April 16, 2025, Gematarix consulted Fandom for permission to add two of his off-site side-projects, SSB Universes and the Mario Compendium, as officially recognized by the Zelda Wiki. His rationale is that the two wikis use the GNU Free Documentation License, which has been replaced at large by the Creative Commons Share-Alike License (CC-BY-SA) on Wikipedia and Fandom since 2009, and that he wants to increase the availability of content using the license, especially for franchises lacking it such as Mario.

Philosophy[]

Zelda Wiki's mission is to serve as the ultimate source of The Legend of Zelda information available online, aiding not only Zelda Universe, but all Zelda fan sites across the internet, connecting the The Legend of Zelda community as a whole through one amazing encyclopedia. As the Wiki gathers affiliations and users, and makes its mark across the internet, it hopes to achieve the type of standards set forth by larger Wiki-based sites such as Wikipedia.

Zelda Wiki is a project that requires an open mind to connect to: Whose site it truly currently belongs to is ambiguous, because everyone who wishes to use this Wiki as "their" Zelda encyclopedia has the right to. So in a sense, it is everyone's wiki: a truly collaborative project that is made up of the communities of every collaborating Zelda fan site.

Achievements[]

  • Currently Zelda Wiki contains 11,767 articles. To date, 84 active users have contributed on Zelda Wiki. (See also: Special:Statistics)
  • The Legend of Zelda and Philosophy: I Link Therefore I Am, published by 'Open Court' in November 2008, mentions Zelda Wiki and recommends it a visit.

  • On August 14, 2009, Zelda Wiki received LegendOfZelda.com's Pinnacle award, given to the overall best site for the last year.[8]
... it is impossible to deny the quality of writing and maintenance that Zelda Wiki maintains ... Not all articles are perfect, but that is the nature of all wikis – the imperfect is perfected, the scrawny are bolstered, and the quest is never ending ... It is a testament to the robustness of this community, this Zelda Online Community, that a project like the Zelda Wiki, which started as Zelda Universe’s own wiki, has evolved into a website that is truly worthy of this award.

  • In issue 53 of the Official Nintendo Magazine UK and issue 16 of the Official Nintendo Magazine Australia and New Zealand, Zelda Wiki and two of its mastermind sites—Zelda Universe and ZeldaInformer—were referred to readers.
If we've piqued your interest in further Zelda timeline discussion, there are loads of fansites out there expanding on some of the theories we've discussed here. Here are a few good starting points:

Retired Staff[]

Retired Wiki Staff[]

The following is a list of former Wiki Staff members; all of them have been recognized for their role in shaping the wiki by a permanent lavender color highlight on their usernames. Retired staff do not keep their administrative rights, but most retired staff can ask to be retrained and retake their role as an admin if they so wish. All users will be listed here, even if they have been banned for their actions.

The staff was formerly divided into three groups: patrollers, admins, and bureaucrats, each with their own rights. This outdated staff structure was a vestige of Zelda Wiki's Mastermind system and was scrapped in 2014. Bureaucrats were renamed to executives, all staff members were given full administrative rights, and a single editor was appointed Wiki Director. This was once again changed on August 22, 2021, when these groups merged into a single group of Wiki Staff while retaining the Wiki Director role, removing the position of Executive. Because of this, many retired Wiki Staff are listed under the old title of Wiki Executive or Bureaucrat because they were members of the staff team before the change.

Furthermore, some people will have a second account link tied to their profile labeled (Zeldapedia). This is because the person originally had an account on Zeldapedia, a different Zelda encyclopedia that merged into Zelda Wiki on June 15, 2019. During this transition, all active Zeldapedia staff members were given administrative rights on Zelda Wiki. Zeldapedia is now kept as an archive and old accounts are linked to it in order to preserve history. People listed under the "Zeldapedia" category were only ever members of the staff team on Zeldapedia, and members in "Zelda Wiki & Zeldapedia" were staff on both Zeldapedia and Zelda Wiki before and after the merge.

On Zeldapedia, there were three types of wiki staff: rollbackers, administrators, and bureaucrats. Rollbackers were simply trusted editors that were given the rollback feature; administrators worked like Wiki Staff and moderated the site; bureaucrats oversaw the whole site and handled user rights, including the promotion of administrators. The occupations of each of these retired staff members are listed under their roles while they were active on Zeldapedia, in order to preserve history.

Retired Community Staff[]

This list contains all former Community Staff members. These people used to help run the wiki's Discord server and social media, but generally did not directly contribute by editing the wiki. Because of this, some people may be listed under both Retired Wiki Staff and Retired Community Staff in the event that they were a part of both teams.

Prior to August 22, 2021, Discord moderators were split into two groups: Server Moderators and Server Executives. However, these two groups have been merged into one group of Discord moderators under Community Staff. Because of this, some retired Discord staff are listed under the old titles of Server Moderator and Server Executive because of their roles at the time that they were moderators.

Contributor Banners[]

As a way to increase activity, some of the Mastermind sites offer 'Zelda Wiki Contributor' banners to members dedicated to both the forum and Zelda Wiki. The banner is not permanent, as users can be stripped of it if they are suspected of having edited Zelda Wiki articles for the sole purpose of obtaining a banner.

Zelda Universe began offering its banner on November 11, 2008. It has since been awarded to 11 people.
