It has been suggested that the portion of this page concerning Picto Box should be made into its own page. Should the target page already exist, this content should be merged into it where appropriate. Discuss this on article's talk page.

Pictography is the premier photographic medium of the Zelda universe, operating as a function of the many different Pictoboxes that take pictures of anything and everything in the surrounding landscape in the game in which it is featured. Often, capturing pictures only offer sidequest-related rewards, not to mention the personal benefits of a bit of leisure time away from Link's stressful quest.

Background on the Pictograph

A Pictograph is a sort of photograph, taken using a Picto Box. Depending on which Picto Box Link has (normal or deluxe, depending on the game), it's possible to get black & white or color pictographs (respectively).

Legendary Pictograph

A Legendary Pictograph is a special Pictograph featured in The Wind Waker, usually of a rare subject. These subjects, with one exception, do not have any place in the game wherein a Pictograph can be taken of them. So Link must purchase Pictographs of these characters from Lenzo. The Pictograph that is offered changes when the phase of the Moon changes. The Pictograph of Ganondorf can also be obtained by taking it during the final boss fight, then saving the game and quiting.

Color Pictography Quests

Windfall Island also includes a few sidequests for the Deluxe Pictobox. Link must find the people requesting pictures and construe exactly what or whom to take a pictograph of. Each quest has it own reward, from Treasure Charts 31, 33, 24, to a Heart Piece.

Appearances

Majora's Mask

The Pictograph Box

The Pictograph Box is is a sepia toned camera available in Majora's Mask, which Link obtains from the Swamp Tourist Center after rescuing Koume from the Woods of Mystery. The Swamp Tourist Center runs a Pictograph Contest during the first day, and if Link submits a pictograph of the Deku King, he will be rewarded with a Piece of Heart. The operator of the contest will also reward him if he submits a pictograph of his son, Tingle.

Later in the game, the Fisherman of Great Bay Village requests that Link take a Pictograph of a Gerudo Pirate as part of the quest to find the Zora Eggs. As a reward, the Fisherman will give Link the Seahorse that he captured near Pinnacle Rock.

The Pictograph Box can hold only one picture at a time.

The Wind Waker

Picto Box

The Picto Box made a second appearance in The Wind Waker. It allows Link to take and store three pictographs at a time. It is found in Tingle's jail cell on Windfall Island, and is obtained by entering Tingle's cell, moving the large box, and solving the crawlspace maze without falling into any rat traps. Wooden floorboards signify a trap, whereas Rupees show the right path. The Picto Box is found inside a treasure chest at the end of the maze. Once Link obtains the Picto Box, he can use it to take black and white pictographs.

Deluxe Picto Box

The Deluxe Picto Box is an upgraded variant of the original Picto Box, which allows its user to take pictures in full color. Lenzo adjusts Link's original Picto Box after he completes the quest which Lenzo sets before him.

Items needed to create the Deluxe Picto Box:

On top of this, three other special Pictographs must be taken using the original Picto Box. All photos are taken on Windfall Island. Necessary for completion are: A Pictograph of a man mailing a love letter, a Pictograph of the man in the cafe, and a final Pictograph of the woman in orange looking at another man who walks across town.

Give all of this to Lenzo and he will create a Deluxe Picto Box.

With the Deluxe Picto Box, Link can use it to take full color Pictographs. If they're good enough, they can be brought to the Nintendo Gallery at Forest Haven and get them made into sculptures.

Central to a hidden location near the Forest Haven in the The Wind Waker, the Picto Box becomes fundamental in a sub-quest which involves taking photos of characters and having models made from the results. (See Nintendo Gallery)

It is also needed for a handful of other side-quests, Color Pictography Quests, including taking a color picture of the full moon. The Second Quest, starts with the Deluxe Picto Box. Most people complete the Nintendo Gallery at this stage.
