— Child wearing Twinmold's mask

Masks are a central plot element in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. There are 25 masks which play a role in the story of Majora's Mask, 24 of which are obtainable and usable by the player.

Quest Purpose

Each of the masks is used to give Link a kind of ability, some more drastic than others. The Deku, Goron, and Zora masks each change Link's form into one of these Hylian/Terminian species, with the Fierce Deity's Mask being a fourth transformation mask that seemingly enhances his Hylian form, albeit altering his appearance noticeably. The remaining 20 obtainable masks have less significant effects, having a range of abilities. Some are only necessary for sidequests and are not required to complete the game. The 25th plot-related mask is the titular Majora's Mask, which the player cannot obtain or use.

List of Masks

Below is a list of the 24 obtainable masks detailing their abilities and requirements for collection. They are listed in the order they appear on the Mask subscreen, left to right descending, with the Transformation masks last.

Postman's Hat

MM PostmansHat

The Postman's Hat is bestowed upon Link by the Postman.[1] After Link shows him the Priority Mail, he will pull himself together and quickly deliver Kafei's Letter to Madame Aroma. The Postman will meet up with Link outside the Milk Bar and give him the Postman's Hat, telling him that he has decided to flee Clock Town.[2] He can be found distressed about wanting to flee on the Third Day. If Link shows him the Priority Mail, he will rush to deliver Kafei's Letter to Madame Aroma, then meet Link outside the Milk Bar and give him this mask. While wearing this mask, Link can check inside mailboxes. This will always result in finding a Green Rupee, with the exception of the first time, which will yield a Piece of Heart.[3]

All-Night Mask

This mask can be purchased from the Curiosity Shop on the Night of the Final DayCite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag It's only use in-game is to listen to the stories of Anju's Grandmother, which can yield two Pieces of Heart. It is necessary to give the appropriate answers to her questions at the end of the stories (for the Four Giants, the answer is "I dunno").[4] [5]

Blast Mask

Blastmask

The Blast Mask is given to Link by the Old Lady from the Bomb Shop. To get it, he must save her from Sakon's attack.[6] At midnight on the Night of the First Day, the Old Lady will enter town through the north gate. She will be attacked by Sakon and he will steal her bag. If Link attacks him with his sword, Sakon will drop the stolen goods, and the Old Lady will reward Link with the Blast Mask.[7] While wearing the mask, the player can press B to cause an explosion from the mask, in the same fashion as a Bomb. Unless Link is using the Shield, the explosion will damage him.
