True to its name, the sword is often seen to choose or accept its master, always a descendant of Link who has gone through great trials to prove them worthy of wielding it. This may be the conscious choice of the sword's spirit, Fi, who sleeps within the sword and only assists her heroic master. It is seen in A Link to the Past that the Master World can further be improved by smith and magic means. However, after its task is accomplished, the sword will regain its original shape. Also, in this game, the Master Sword's power to repel evil seems to be weaker than ever, since if the Master Sword is not improved into its golden shape (at least tempered shape in the GBA version), only the Spin Attack can hurt Ganon, normal attack do anything against him.

In Skyward Sword, it is revealed that the Master Sword was originally known as the Goddess Sword, which rested in Skyloft, a floating island above the clouds.

When Link first draws the weakened Master Sword from its pedestal, its guard is curved into the blade rather than extending outward as it once did; moreover, the gem that rests at the base of the blade is black rather than gold, and the symbol of the Triforce is missing. As Link awakens the new Sages of Earth and Wind, the Sages return the power to repel evil to the blade: the guard's original position is recovered with the Earth Sage's prayers,

Some fans believe that during the boss battle against Puppet Zelda, the light infusion of the sword gives it the ability to repel projectile attacks being sent at Link in order to damage the foe. However, there is no evidence to support this as the Master Sword was perfectly able to do this in previous games without the light infusion. In fact, this ability of repelling these evil attacks could be part of the sword's "power to repel evil". The most likely answer is simply because the sword is highly reflective due to the fact the Empty Bottles can be used for the same purpose in a few games of the series.

In the final battle against Ganondorf, Link uses the Ending Blow to thrust the Master Sword into Ganondorf's chest, defeating him. During the ending credits, the sword is shown resting in its pedestal in the Sacred Grove.

Moreover, he can obtain the magic of the Bombos, Quake, and Ether Medallion by holding the Master Sword up into the sky next to certain inscriptions around Hyrule. Also, the only time seen in the series, during the course of the game Link can upgrade the Master Sword. Its first upgrade is the tempered shape, acquired by bringing the Master Sword to the Dwarven Swordsmiths in The Smithery located on the outskirts of Kakariko Village, after Link reunite the two dwarves and pay a ridiculous amount of 10 rupees as a big discount for reunite them. In the tempered shape, the Master Sword is two times stronger than its standard form (the Sword Beam still has the same power of the normal form however), has a glowing orange blade and make a deeper swing sound as opposed to the usual slash sound.

Its second and last upgrade is the golden shape, acquired by giving the Master Sword or Tempered Sword to the Fat Fairy in the Mysterious Pond of the Dark World within the Pyramid of Power, accessible by blowing up the entrance using the Super Bomb. In the golden shape, the Master Sword is four times stronger (this time including the Sword Beam) than its standard form, killing almost any enemies in one hit, has a golden blade and green hilt, has the ability to break jars and skull jars, and also make a deeper swing sound like the tempered form. Since the Master Sword is already a powerful weapon, in its golden shape, it seems logical to be one of the strongest sword in all of the Legend of Zelda series.

Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages
The Master Sword makes a reappearance in the Oracle series, fittingly as the most powerful sword in the game. When combined with the power of the Red Ring, the Master Sword is capable of taking down almost any boss in two to three Spin Attacks. The only way to unlock the Master Sword is to have finished one of the games, and to have started a Linked Game on the opposite game. When a certain secret in the game is found and told to Farore, she will upgrade the Noble Sword Link currently holds into the Master Sword. However, if Link still has the Wooden Sword, the Wooden Sword will become the Noble Sword, and the Master Sword will be found where the Noble Sword would have been.

Discrepancies
Until the release of Skyward Sword, the origin of the Master Sword was never seen and only alluded to it what could be considered legends that were corrupted by oral tradition, others may be the fault of mistranslations from Japanese. According to the English manual of A Link to the Past, after Ganon entered the Golden Land and obtained the Triforce, the people of Hyrule forged a sword resistant to magic, which could even repulse powers granted by the Triforce. The seven Sages searched for one worthy of wielding the Master Sword, but never found such a person, leaving them, with the aid of the knights of Hyrule, to seal away Ganon instead. Although the mistranslated English manual states that the Master Sword was not created until after Ganon invaded the Golden Land, the Japanese manual states that it was forged long before the Imprisoning War. The location of the blade was already forgotten by the time of the Imprisoning War, and no hero was found worthy of wielding it.

Both the English and Japanese manual of A Link to the Past describe that the Master Sword was forged by the people of Hyrule, and not necessarily by the Ancient Sages. It isn't until Twilight Princess that Princess Zelda mentions the Ancient Sages crafted the Master Sword.

Skyward Sword, which takes place at the beginning of the Zelda Timeline, reveals the complete and true origin of the Master Sword, revealing that it was forged into its well-known current form from being the Goddess Sword crated by the goddess Hylia. It should be noted that symbols of the Sages are, in fact, at the Temple of Hylia, implying that they were, as stated in Twilight Princess, involved in the forging of its original form.

Design, Abilities and Characteristics
When the Master Sword was first introduced in artworks of A Link to the Past, the sword's grip was red and its cross-guard yellow (in-game, both the grip and guard are red). However, in its pedestal, the Master Sword has the traditional blue grip and blue guard (and the tempered shape, a upgrade of the Master Sword accessible during the game, regain the traditional blue grip and blue guard). A good explanation would be that at this time in the Decline Timeline, where Hyrule decline and diminish over time and Ganon conquered the Golden Land and the Triforce, the Master Sword's power to repel evil is weaker than ever (explaining also why the Master Sword in its normal form hurt Ganon only with Spin Attacks), and the sword regain its power only after being tempered or enchanted by the Fat Fairy, where the Master Sword becomes more powerful than any other of its appearances in the series. However, after its task is accomplished, the sword will regain its original shape. The Triforce can be seen engraved in the lower part of the blade.

The Master Sword's most known ability is the power to vanquish evil and break curses that involve powerful, dark magic. However, in order to keep the power to repel evil intact, two Sages, known as the Earth Sage and the Wind Sage, are in charge of praying to the gods and thus infuse the Master Sword with the gods' power. Should something happen to these Sages, the Master Sword will weaken and lose its might to combat evil.

Only the true hero that is "pure of heart and strong of body" is capable of wielding the sacred blade,<ref>{{cite|You got the Master Sword! The Master Sword also acts as a key to gain entrance to the Temple of Light. If the Master Sword is retrieved from its pedestal in the Temple of Time, the portal to the Sacred Realm will open, eventually leading to the Triforce. Other than acting as the entrance to the Temple of Light, the sacred blade, in conjunction with the Pedestal of Time, has the ability to lock away evil magic and prevent its bearer from using it until the Master Sword is withdrawn from its pedestal.<ref name=ganon>{{cite|By the way, boy... You see, it is also a sort of key... a most wretched little key that has kept the seal on me and my magic intact! In the A Link to the Past comic, Sahasrahla's Wife elaborates on part of the Master Sword's history: she tells of ancient scrolls that speak of the prosperous people who once inhabited the land of Hyrule. Multiple Languages

I don't think we should have the English and Spanish articles on the same page. Could someone please create a template for es:Subject?

Doesn't really seem practical to have duplicate, foreign language articles here. Perhaps spanish speakers should use Wikipedia.es. --Adam 13:46, 12 July 2007 (PDT)

Seed quotes

Are these really necessary? Yes, it's interesting to note that they added different phrases for each of these items, but do we really need a breakdown of what each of the items causes him to say? Promoting removal of quotes. --Ando 19:40, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't know Ando-these facts are interesting-I think we should keep them SOMEWHERE on the Wiki, and it adds some detail to what is a VERY small page to begin with. ZeldaGirl96 01:37, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps. Is there any way we can make it look better, though? At the very least a splitting of this article into MM and OoA sections would be lovely. I'll see what I can do. User:Ando/sig 03:49, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm going to have to say no on that. It is short and does not take up much space. Besides, I spent twenty minutes trying to get him to take a Bombchu. Mostly because I ran out of Bombchu and had to get more, they are not cheap.User:Matt/sig 03:54, July 12, 2008 (UTC)

True Idenity

I tryed using the floating hack in MM to try and get under him and identify him. However, it is too dificult, I mean if you get too low you die, and if you go to high, you end up on the first floor. I guess we would have to find out the way we found out that the person from Super Mario Sunshine was a tanned Running Man. -- կրակ (խոսել) -- 02:57, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm wondering if the origins of ??? might be the toilet ghost of Korean folklore. It appears as a hand sticking out of the toilet and asks if you prefer red or blue. (The answer determines how it kills you.) While Korea and Japan aren't on the friendliest of terms, I've seen cultural exchange between the two in media before, and this seems like just the sort of crazy story that the Zelda team would reference as a joke. --User:Bodo/sig 23:28, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Phoeni

In Skyward Sword, this thing is female, and is named Phoeni.KrytenKoro 04:25, 4 December 2011 (EST)

Can you please cite your source? This sounds pretty "Phoeni" to me. User:Abdullah/sig 04:30, 4 December 2011 (EST)
Unfortunately, I have already completed the quest with Karane and Pipit, and can no longer go back and use Fi on the hand, but the Prima guide gives the name as Phoeni. This should be quick to confirm for anyone who chose the other path.KrytenKoro 04:38, 4 December 2011 (EST)

 • "This is the hand of a ghost. The ghost's original name is unknown. Judging from its appearance, I calculate a 90% chance it belonged to a young girl. Over 80% of ghosts are said to harbor some kind of unfulfilled desire. I suggest you cease being scared and speak to her."
 • "This is the hand of a ghost. Identity while alive is unknown. Judging from the look of this hand, the probability that it was a young girl's is 90%. Master, the letter you gave her from Cawlin has inspired feelings for him. The original purpose of the letter is still unclear."

Those are the only two comments Fi makes about her. I'll change her name back in light of this. However, I'd like it if you could find the pages that call her "Phoeni" so that we can source it somewhere. User:Abdullah/sig 04:16, 20 December 2011 (EST)

...huh. Well gotdammit, Prima.
Anyway, it's the page in the side quest appendix covering the Cawlin quest. I'll try to look it up when I get home.KrytenKoro 09:41, 20 December 2011 (EST)

Moaning Myrtle

Is it possible that ??? from SS could be a reference of “moaning” Myrtle from the Harry Potter-series? I mean, both of them is ghosts and both of them live on toilets. --Niklas 10:53, 26 January 2012 (EST) Template:OT

How is that Off-Topic? I just thought of it, so we could set it in on trivia or something as a referance! --Niklas 12:42, 27 January 2012 (EST)
