Hylian Retriever are Animals in Breath of the Wild.[1]

Characteristics[]

Hyrule Compendium Entry

028 (028) Hylian Retriever
BotW Hyrule Compendium Hylian Retriever
Description
The native breed of this mammal varies by region, but one thing remains true: this animal has been known as "man's best friend" since ancient times. They're very clever and obedient, so aside from serving as pets, they are also put to work watching over grazing livestock. It's said that all Hylian retrievers are descendants of the dog once owned by the king of Hyrule.
Common Locations
Akkala Highlands
Hebra Mountains
Recoverable Materials
None

Hylian Retrievers are a type of Dog often found at Stables and in some settlements. They are omnivorous, and will eat certain Materials, such as meat, fruit, and vegetables, if they are nearby. They will also move around, generally a lot more than any other domesticated animal, chasing their own tails, rolling onto their backs, crouching down, and even shaking their bodies to dispel water after they get wet, often during or after it rains.

They're commonly known to be "man's best friend",[2] Due to their intelligence and obedience, Hylian Retrievers are also great at watching over livestock.[3] It's rumored that all modern Retrievers are descended from a Dog owned by the king of Hyrule Kingdom.[4]

If Link stands close to a Hylian Retriever or feeds the Retriever, it will become happy, signified by a pink blush effect appearing around its head. While it is happy, the Dog will follow Link around within the Stable or settlement. If Link feeds the Retriever three times while it is happy, it may lead Link to a buried Treasure Chest nearby.[5]

I'm Hidemaro Fujibayashi, director of The Legend of Zelda™: Breath of the Wild.

I'll be updating you with some useful tips about the game. And if you own the game, you may even get some free in-game items for reading. I hope you all look forward to it!

Now, today's useful tip is about dogs.

    Spoilers ahead!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

On your journey, you may have already come across some of the many stables dotted across Hyrule. But did you know that you can befriend the dogs at these stables? The dogs will start to like you if you spend some time with them, so stand nearby and be good company. Once they are happy, try feeding them three pieces of meat or three pieces of fruit. They may even find a nice surprise for you!

To get you on your way, please accept this in-game gift of two apples and one piece of meat. If you start your game by using the link below, the items will appear in your game. Just make sure that you either have the game card inserted or the digital version of the game on your system.

We hope to enjoy making some furry friends!"
